a lot of other people mentioned why on here, and they're right. God didn't create us directly from dust nor did he create anyone else from a man's rib.
but something that stood out to me in your question was "why are we being punished as well?"
Jesus died on the cross (as redundant as this may be) so that we don't have to take the punishment for our sin, and even further, he wanted us to have an intimate relationship with Him.
John 14:6 clearly and forwardly says that we can only come to the Father, God, through Jesus. Being with God is the opposite of punishment, so therefore the only way we can be free of that punishment is through Christ.

The concept of "sin" as an act by humans that requires punishment in an afterlife was a developede by the Romans after their empire had crumbled due to corruption, greed, cruelty and averice. Christians beleived that being tortured to death made them martyrs and gave them automatic access to heaven. So since the Emporers could no longer threaten pain and death, they changed hats, declared themselves not only Christians, but the leaders of Christianity - thus the Emporer became a Pope. Instead of threatening eternal pain and suffering, he threatened eternal pain and suffering.
The Pope and later preachers - became the one who assigned definitions of "sin" The idea that Adam and Eve sinned and bore children who are supposed to be our orignianl relatives. the Popes found it easy enough to jump from that bit of odd logic to: We are born of and in sin. If you are willing to believe that, then the concept that Jesus died for those sins in horrible pain and suffering is pretty easy to swallow, thus making us feel guilty if we don't thank Jesus by believing the myth the Popes created.
It's all based on weird faith and explained by "God works in mysterious ways." In the 1200's through the 1500's anyone who questioned these leaps of faith was horribly tortured in an "inquisition" so the majority of people accepted the laPope's in terpritations of Jesus' words

Original sin was the cause of what we must now deal with. It's like if you blow up the only car factory on earth then every one else will not have a car because of you. Adam and Eve created the curse of evil in the world and because of that we all will sin. If evil is in the world then we will be tempted by it and eventually sin because no man is perfect.
That does not mean we should not strive to be perfect.
We show our love for God when we obey his commandments.
This is what we came to earth for. In heaven there can be no sin. We came to earth to prove to heavenly father that we would strive for greatness and to try to obey his commandments as best we could. He who strives the hardest will be given the greatest reward of glory.
Does that mean we are saved by our works? NO! We are all saved by the grace of Jesus Christ if we follow him. But what we do here on earth will influence what reward we will be given in Heaven.
We are striving for grace in the eyes of our father in heaven just like we try to please our boss at work for a promotion.

First, The fact that you aren't in paradise is the punishment itself.
On a more philosophical level, Adam and eve were like the roots af a tree to the rest of mankind. Anything that happens to the roots is going to effect the branches.

because adam and eve are everyone's first original father and mother. They had kids, those kids had kids etc. so the sin was passed down through all generations. God is your ultimate father if you are saved that is.

In Adam all die, In Christ all are made alive. Original sin was passed on to us, but the spirit of Christ is now passed on to us.

Genetics. When sin entered the world, it polluted the gene pool of humanity. Adam and Eve no longer were contained in the perfect environment made for them, and they no longer possessed the traits of perfection. By nature, their genes would not be able to pass perfection on to the next generation.
Isn't it great, though, that Christ came to overcome the sin in the world? Cleansed of the sin nature, we can life a holy life..not perfect, for we are human, but with the pure intentions of one who only wants to please the Father.

We are the offshoots of Adam and Eve. We are not direct creations of God...thus we carry the genetics of Adam and Eve. According to the scriptures, (in my own words), God removed his protection and his provision from them as their punishment for their disobedience....and by inheritance (if you want to call it that) God's protection and provision was also removed from us.(genetically speaking) Thus, we get old, sick, and will die also.

Because if the people that wrote the first testament did not include a guilt trip to threaten none believers there would be no point in listening to them and the religion would fail. All religion has a guilt base in it so as to provide a reason to follow as we do not want to be guuilty,

Because God is stubborn and refused to just start over...
He almost started over with the flood thing, but it seems that drowning babies wasn't enough... had to save out some people to pass on that original sin once more.
It was his mercy, dontcha know.
