Dude, for you as a foreigner I think about 80sqm should do, you can go smaller, of course, but you can also go up to 250sqm or even bigger, depending on your budget and also on the location. Beijing has several ring roads and within the 4th ring road, especially in the east, it's getting really expensive. I live on the the outer side of the 4th ring road and I pay 4,000RMB for a 82sqm apartment which is quite new (about 3 years) and western style. I know that with the Olympics coming to Beijing next year some landlords go totally crazy and raise the rent by 100%. You might wanna live somewhere between the 4th and the 2nd ring road east, that's where it's happening, it's the Central Business District (CBD) of Beijing and also has a huge number of bars. Presently there are new apartment buildings opening everywhere so you shouldn't have any problem finding a place. I suggest you take the help of an agent. To find one check out www.thatsbj.com, you can also place an add on there.

I went to a village near guangzhou, and the houses there were not too bad. It's sort of like a miniature apartment, not like ordinary houses in canada and usa. It has multi-levels. To rent, you should go to china and ask people about prices. It should be around RMB$1000/month for a nice cozy house to share with others.

Have you though about writing the Chinese Embassy for what in America would be a welcome packet? I have a friend who travels to China frequently and he mentioned getting some information from them. They might be able to answer some of your questions.
