Well, they are doing both actually. If you are brown and a Muslim, then they are particularly interested in you. The term started with the profiling of blacks based on race, so it just stuck and got used for Muslims as well.
I'm a Muslim and I think law enforcement should use profiling. That's not to say that I think people should be harassed, but as with any criminal element, it makes sense to focus your resources where there is more likely to be a problem based on past criminal cases.
EDIT: Youtheguy- You are wrong on all three of your "facts". In addition, Muslims in America are not disadvantaged and undereducated. In fact, they are more educated and wealthier than the average American. There are studies to prove that if you bother to look. Further, where are these problems "all over the world"? True there are a few trouble spots, but how about a little perspective, please? There are Muslim minorities living peacefully in just about every country in the world and there have been for centuries. If you stop "learning" Islam from Christian propaganda sites, you might learn a thing or two. Would you say I had a good grasp of Christianity if I learned about it from Mullah Omar?

You're right that racial profiling is the wrong term. I think it's just common sense to watch Muslims since it is Muslims that want us dead. That's the term that should be used...common sense.
God Bless.

Not all Muslims are Arab or Middle Eastern. However even if your not Muslim if you have dark skin or look Middle Eastern or have a heavy accent then you get stopped by the authorities at the airport and have your belongings being looked through because of your race. My husband is Saudi Arabian and he had his belongings looked through and had to take his shoes off when he arrived in the USA and was questioned about why he was here before he was allowed to get on the plane to Ohio. He was in Washington D.C. when he was stopped by local authorities because of his passport.

Actually, it is racial profiling. Not all Muslims are dark skined, with dark eyes and hair, but don't kid yourself, dark skined men are being stopped at airports. Ask my husband, a Hispanic, who has been stopped at an airport because he is a dark skinned man with a beard. Once they found out he wasn't Arab, they made a big deal wondering if he was a citizen (he is PR).

Some of the people who have had problems with the airlines are not Muslim...but are instead just someone who happens to look "Muslim". It is like assuming that all people with blonde hair and blue eyes must be scandanavian. Not so.

its called protecting the non-muslims from homicide bombers... because its against MY CIVIL RIGHTS to be blown up in a plane, or a train, or a bus or a car, at a club or at a bar, or so on..
So instead of worrying about the "civil rights" of muslim terrorists its time for muslims to start worrying about the worldwide terrrorism done in the name of islam, and begin to end it!

It is not.
Muslims come in all colors and from all cultures and races.
Some Muslims ARE violent and dangerous to people inluding other Muslims who do not share their agenda.

Semantics, but it is actually racial, I have yet to hear of an airline asking you what religion you are yet they know your nationality.
