I jog for an hour (about 5 and a quarter miles each time) at least 3 times a week, and I'm looking for a dog that I can jog with every day. Any suggestions? Also, I run on the sidewalk or pavement, so should I get doggy shoes?

All dogs, apart from the toy breeds and a few physically strange dogs (aka Bassets, Frenchies) can run with you and like it... they all can keep up pretty much.. The thing is you need to get them to that level. You cant run to the pound or buy a puppy and expect him to run that far or fast. If you gradually get him used to it... a good ole Heinz 57 from your local shelter would be the best!!!
Doggie shoes arent needed unless you did excessive running. Dogs can do 5 to 10 miles daily. Watch his paw pads every day.. if they are picking any foriegn matter or the nails are grinding to the quick then get some doggie shoes but not every dog will get acustomed to them.

Boxer's love to exercise and run. They also make great family dogs. They think they're lap dogs and are naturally gentle with small children. Although they are a bit stubborn they are highly intelligent.

Boxer Disposition and Temperament
Energetic, Playful, Loyal, Family Oriented. If owners of this fun loving breed were asked to describe a Boxer these are just a few examples that would be used. The Boxer was originally bred for work but also makes an excellent choice when looking for a family pet. Although no two Boxer dogs are alike, there are common characteristics that a Boxer should display.

What Makes A Boxer
If a poll conducted amongst all Boxer owners for choosing one word to describe this breed the overwhelming choice would be Playful. The Boxer is an amazing breed in its youthful exuberance is shown from the puppy stage to the senior years. A Boxer that is not playful, is just not a Boxer. With their uncanny knack for always-making owners smile, a Boxer household is one that is constantly filled with joy and laughter.

Profession
If a single profession could be chosen for the Boxer most owners today would say a clown would be the most fitting. Whether wiggling or wagging, the Boxer is constantly entertaining and one can not help but smile even when in the worse of moods. The Boxer has a variety of tricks to make us laugh. One of the most common is “kidney beaning”. This is a dance a Boxer does when it is excited. It involves the dog turning itself into a semi-circle (similar to the shape of a “kidney bean”, hence the name) and turning in a circle. This is one of the best benefits of the Boxer because who would not love to see this each day when coming home from a tiring day of work.

Another trick of the trade for the Boxer is the elusive “woo-woo”. This is the sound they make when they want something or are excited. It is not exactly a bark, but similar. If you have heard a Boxer “woo-woo” you would know as it is such a unique sound and it sounds as if they are saying “woo-woo” look at me!

The general movements of the Boxer at times while running can be a very enjoyable experience to walk. A healthy, happy Boxer is a treat to see run free as they have a glow and you can feel the happiness they are experiencing. When the Boxer runs also are on the lookout as many will also jump, twist and even somersault end over end for your viewing pleasure.

If the dog isn't used to running that much, take him for shorter runs at first and build it up to where it can run the whole way with you. Also his feet may not be used to running on the sidewalk, so shorter runs will help toughen the pads. If you run where there is grass along the path, you can let the dog run on that to give him a break from pavement.
A bigger dog sounds like a great companion for you to run with. A smaller dog will end up taking many more steps and may not adjust well to a 5 mile run.

Labs, goldens, german shepherds, rhodesian ridgebacks, smooth collie-the rough collie may get way too hot with all the fur, pointers, setters, dalmations, weimeraners, pits, rotties, border collies, australian cattle dogs, australian shepherds, and any other working dogs/herding dogs. And of course, mutts.

In addition to the good recommendations that people have already made, you could check the shelters for Lab mixes, especially black ones (black dogs are statistically the least-adopted dogs). Anything similar to Labs in terms of body shape and size make great running buddies. Also, don't exclude mutts!

okay...you should pick a dog from the Sporting Group. Doggy shoes are not necessary. Just make sure that your dog's nails are clipped regularly. Long nails are painful and may cause your dog to walk awkwardly.
here is a list of the dogs in the Sporting Group: http://www.dog.com/breed/sporting%20group.asp

Labs are perfect dogs for that!! They do not need doggy shoes-infact the running is good because it helps keep thier nails filed down

An APBT loves exercise of all kinds. Once trained will run right beside you (but of course you'd have to put up with people that would run from the dog.)
So I guess I'd think a mixed breed dog from the shelter would be exactly what you need, because all dogs love exercise and fun time with their family! stick with the larger breeds so they wont slow you down!

german short haired pointer, minimal shedding, lots of stamina for your kind of running, doesn't overheat too easily and is great with people, not a dog that is aggressive with other dogs either. GSP Isn't a really large dog, more of a medium one that will be easier for you to take hiking with or camping later, kind of all around good dog for families if that is in your future, too. They don't yap either.

i can't imagine a border collie would ever stop running, so if you're looking for a purebred i'd say that's your best bet. for a running partner now, however, a pup won't do! and i wonder if their shaggy coats would make them too hot..
you know what? get a greyhound! =] they have greyhound rescues for those poor dogs at those racing tracks that get abused, then you'd have a running partner all ready to go. they absolutely love to run, too.
