Sorry, I can't sympathise, because my family was too poor to give me piano lessons and I would have loved to play the violin even. Count your blessings.

You're obviously living a privileged life if this is the greatest of your worries. Others have to worry about finding food, or a roof over their heads.

If you have been playing the violin for four years, but only realized that you don't want to play it anymore shortly after your parents spent $700 for a violin, this must be a rather new feeling. So I suggest that you give it some time. You can sing in a choir and still play the violin. Try it.

Also share your feelings with your parents.

I agree with Guitargadfly. Join choir but don't give up the violin just yet. My hunch is you will find a very interesting relationship between singing and playing the violin.

NO! Don't smash it!!! But, do realize that $700 is a very low price for a violin. A decent violin usually goes for 3000, anything below probably isn't worth it. So since you want to quit, i guess it's pretty good it was cheap. Try and make a deal with your parents to let you quit. . . like, if i ever want to quit the piano i have to learn all of our church hymns. So, you can say that if you learn all three octave scales, then you can quit. Something like that would probably impress them. but if not, you can always just tell them the truth. calmly, of course!!!

JOIN CHOIR as soon as you can. Tell the folks that Choir and singing are a necessary and supporting musical activity to violin. EVERY good musician MUST have vocal training. Then see what unfolds as you go.

If you really hate it, you should quit. Violins go up in value, so mom and dad can sell the instrument, I'm sure.
