Well I am 14 years old and this summer was my first summer of working. Well i was a dishwasher at a restaurant and was doing great. people were saying was doing a good job, one guy even said I was the best guy in there and my employer was going to give me more hours. Tonight i got in there and there was no running water (pipes broken) and i couldnt run the dishwasher or the sink. They brought in a vat of water and put it into the sink and told me to handwash which was redicolous for a restuarant on a busy night . I was trying hard but soon found myself overwhelmed in an absolute mountain of dishes I couldnt get cleaned before the waitors were complaining that there was more and I had to hurry up. It was way to much for me I was very stressed out at the time as well about my grandma in the hospital and I just lost it and walked out without saying anything. I called my boss and explained what happend and asked if I could still work there and he said dontcount on it nd hungup.WhatshudIdo?

Find another job, but send dad in to pick up your last pay check (No running water is a health code violation, so perhaps a judicious call is in order........)

You can't, really. I know you're stressed out, and the workload was heavy. Probably no one would object if you were way behind on the dishwashing because it was broken down, but walking out on a restaurant is the ultimate no-no - they have to serve the clients whether you're there or not, so what you did made you unreliable with no backup. If you explained the situation with your grandmother, I might reconsider, but if your boss said no, then he's not interested.

Otherwise, if I was a manager, I'd not let you back, because who would know when you would walk out again?

That said, if you think it wouldn't happen again, you can apply at another restaurant, and you don't have to mention this one. No one has a "permanent record" of your work history, and you can simply not list this as a former employer.

So, as a rule, you are certainly welcome to walk out (although it's not a good work ethic) but the price you pay is that you're not allowed back in. You don't have to report every work experience to every new employer, though, but you don't want to build a reputation of doing this on a regular basis. But if you feel there were extenuating circumstances, and you're only 14, and this won't happen again, I'd say apply somewhere else and forget about your prior employer (although you're entitled to collect for the work up until that point).

it is a code violation for a restaurant to stay open without running water, report them to the health inspector. you did nothing wrong, you went way above & beyond what can be reasonably expected of you; your boss however made a major mistake by not closing down immediately.the dishes can not be sanitized properly without hot water & the right mix of chemicals (which will burn your skin), never mind customers using the toilets without running water. every restaurant i ever worked for, sent the customers home with an apology immediately. you sound like a hard worker, and handled this difficult situation pretty well for your age; i've seen 20 year veterans panic & walk out, so don't feel bad. confirm that you are fired & pick up your paycheck. then look for another job. good luck, friend!

Well first slow down and check you spelling.
Second you are fired. Don't go back. You were handed a difficult situation and you gave up and ran away. Do you think it will be the last one? As an employer I want employees that will hunker down, work out of the weeds and find a way to get it done. You chose to run and then blame your grandma's health as the reason. Nice try. Let me let you in on a little secret: Everyone's grandma gets sick and dies. I know its hard. I was 30 when I lost my mother in the midst of starting my own business. It's just life. I guarantee your grandma would not want you running away from hard times and using her as the reason.
Learn from your mistake. Don't let tough situations scare you and you'll find that one way or another things work out if you try hard enough and work though them. Don't give up so easily! Trust me you will be faced with much much more difficult situations in the future. You've gotta face them head on.

You are not going to get your job back there, they will wonder if you will do the same thing again under stress ( although I believe the situation tonight was quite alot of stress). You will be better off looking for a job somewhere else and now that you have the experience you shouldn't have a problem. Good luck!

Write it off to Character building---- all you had to do was put your mind to it and do your best for a couple of more hours, you chose to walk away--- and leave everyone in a bad state, some clean plates are better then none. Nothing abnormal for a 14 year old; but you don't want to be still doing it when your 20.

Yes they were asking a lot from you but they had no other option. If you really like working there try calling back in a day or two and apologize some more, tell you're boss that it won't happen again and you'd really like you're job back. Just don't make excuses and own up for your mistakes.

You put them in a really bad spot when you walked out, you know. As mean as they were to you, you needed to stick in there. It's hard to handwash dishes quickly, but something was better than nothing. Imagine what chaos ensued when you left... yeah, you really did that to them, it's really not surprising they don't want you to come back.
