There are still mental hospitals, but they are not like the extraordinarily cruel ones that you may have seen in the movies. Now, people tend to prefer "care in the community" - non-dangerous mentally ill people living as normal a life as possible with help from family, friends, and the state.

Places like Broadmoor are basically prisons for the mentally ill - people who have killed others, or committed GBH etc.

There are still Psychiatric hospitals but they aren't like the ones in the movies any more. On the secure unit where the most disturbed/dangerous patients are held there is heightened security but no padded cells etc. The one I worked in looked a lot like the movie type of hospital with the long dark corridors and staircases going off all over the place but the wards were a lot nicer. It has been closed for many years now although the building is still there, I think they've sold it for development for housing. I know I wouldn't like to live there it was still a very creepy place.
Oh yes, it's in Lancaster

Yep there are. The three remaining Victorian institutions for the what were once called "The Criminally Insane" are Carstairs in Scotland, Rampton in Central England and Broadmoor in the South of England.
Very early on in my career I worked at Rampton for one year.
The "straight jackets" are gone nowadays but I would be interested to know if they still smell like "Piss and Paraldehyde" That being the the drug used to radically sedate out of control patients, ( which had a powerful lingering smell and which was also a diuretic, hence the expression ).

Broadmoor Hospital (formerly Broadmoor Asylum for the Criminally Insane) in Crowthorne is probably about as close as one could get.
