I keep getting different answers. I asked at the post office today and was told yes. But when I looked up online, it said no. Mine expired and I have to renew anyway, but will be going to Canada in the fall and need to get a straight answer because then I have to send in my renewal right away. Thanks!

The rules keep changing and at a faster rate than some websites. And the rules are different for each situation.

If you are driving to Canada, you wont need a passport by this fall.

If you are flying before September 30, (so your flight home is complete by then) then you need to have applied but don't need to have received it yet.

Flights afte Sept 30 you will need a passport again.

Only if you fly. If you drive you only need birth certicate and ID until next year.
Statement from Canada: "Land and sea travelers are encouraged to have a valid U.S. passport. If they do not have a passport, they should be prepared to provide a government-issued photo ID (e.g. Driver's License) and proof of U.S. citizenship such as a U.S. birth or naturalization certificate. "

In addition air travels who have applied but not recieved may fly until Sept. 30th with the renewel reciept and same ID as above.
