How can I get her to stop acting so over-excited anytime anyone drops by? She's beyond listening to anyone and occasionally (but rarely) pees in her excitement. Just sitting still is completely impossible for her to do. She's an 18 month old golden retriever.

I take her for walks and to the dog park. There are 3 people in this family and we all work various times so most of the time someone is at home with her. We had her to puppy obedience classes but that was embarrasing.

Alot of unsocialized untrained dogs act the exact same way.. You have to exercise her more, get her tired.. When you have company tell people not to give her any attention til she is calm and quiet. When people come over, don't you get excited and racing to the door.. Walk calmly to the door and answer it calmly. If you are excited you teach her to be excited.. You should take some training classes.. Classes teach you how to train your dog.

Whenever company comes over, have her locked up. I know, it doesn't seem the best, but, it will help a little bit. This way, she be able to detect that there are people in the next room. Once the crowd has been to your house for about 10 minutes, you may let your dog out. But, make sure that she is a little bit calm and that everyone in the room is willing to see her. But, remind the people that she gets a little excited, so beware. If she gets too excited after letting her out, lock her back up again. Don't let her out until everyone has left. Next time company comes over, do the same thing. That way, your dog might learn not to be as excited. If this doesn't work, I would recommend that you talk to your vet about this. The vet will be able to help!

Thanks, and good luck!

She needs more training, more socializing, and I would daresay that you need some training yourself on how to train her.
Remember that dogs are social animals, and she stays home all day while you go out and socialize, so it's only natural for her to get excited when someone comes over.
The hyperactivity can be controlled, and training will improve her behavior dramatically.
Get her enrolled in an obedience class, which will also help with the socializing.
Then, when you have visitors, make sure she sits and stays calm until you allow her to greet the guests.

LOL, I'm glad their excited! My dog does the same thing although she is angry. But she acts just the way your dog does when any of my family members or I come home and she does occasional pee. She might need to be trained but it's just so cute when you come home and someone is excited to see you every time!

I know exactly how you feel! I do this though, when people first come over, put her in her crate with a towel over it so she cant see the people arriving, (arrival is the part that really excites pups!) then after a while, give your guest a treat and hold your pup in your arms (the floor will make her antsy) or make her sit or lay down then ask your guest to give it to her. if she hasnt calmed down, put her back in her crate with the towel over it or hold her firmly but not to hard. if your holding her though, if she starts to bark, put her back in her crate and ignore her behavior. this will show her that that is not the way to get attension! good luck!

kk...listen...whatever you do, do not pet the dog when it begin to bark. lower your voice (deep voice, not high pitched). tell her "no" and make a loud "tch" sound and touch her on the side with the tips of your fingers and squeeze a bit (this feel like a corrective bite to her). when you touch her like this it is like her mother reprimanding her as a puppy. never say "it's okay" and don't pet her. hope that helps
