First distillation is to heat it, and pump it into the bottom of a distillation tower. The various gases created condense out at various levels for the desire fuels. Second level of distillation, and this could also be used without using the first type of distillation, is to heat the crude, or what is left over from other types of distillation, to about 600 degrees F, and spray it into the bottom of a distillation column that is being operated under vacuum. The oil in this case is to be "cracked" to force it into smaller molecular chains to obtain more gasoline, or what ever fuel is desired than what the more basic types of distillation would produce. What is commonly used as a catalyst for the cracking is common brick that has been broken into pieces.
