There are many accounts in the Bible, which employ a literary device used by Jewish Old and New Testament writers called Midrash. Midrash is the substantive of the Hebrew word darash which means to search, to investigate, to study and, also, to expound on the fruits of the research. The aim of Midrash is to draw from Scripture a lesson for the present.

Midrash could also be defined as a "reflection on Scripture in the light of the actual situation of God's people and of the developments of God's action on its history." It proposes to explain the meaning of Scripture in the light of the later historical experience of God's people. This kind of interpretation often opened the door to embellishments of the sacred accounts, anachronisms, and a freedom in handling and maneuvering the data of tradition that were at times a little too candid and certainly very imaginative.

Peace and every blessing!

Joshua didnt do it , God did it. God probably stopped the earth from spinning. Lets put it this way God who started everything spinning in the first place can stop and start it anytime he wants. Childs play for the mater of the universe. God also made the sun go backwards for King Hezekiah

2 nd Kings 20:9-11 And Isaiah said, This sign shalt thou have of the LORD, that the LORD will do the thing that he hath spoken: shall the shadow go forward ten degrees, or go back ten degrees? And Hezekiah answered, It is a light thing for the shadow to go down ten degrees: nay, but let the shadow return backward ten degrees. And Isaiah the prophet cried unto the LORD: and he brought the shadow ten degrees backward, by which it had gone .

So in this case God actually had the earth spin backwards for 20 minutes and the resume its normal spin. Again childs play for our awesome omnipotent creator. Here is another question for evolutionary atheists.. If the big bang is true, and everything exploded form a spinning mass of matter , every piece of the explosion should be spinning the same way the mass was before it exploded. Why then are some of the planets in our solor system spinning the opposite way? Answer : again God did it to make you big bang evolutionists look foolish.

Joshua didn't make the sun stand still, God did. He kept the sun still so the Israelites could defeat their enemies the Gibeonites. It was discovered lately that the effects of the day was felt around the world. This site has that and some more on what was the Long Day.

So maybe God made the sun move backward in space while the earth was rotating so it would stay in the same spot in the sky.

in any case God made it happen ...He hearkened to the words of Joshua....because Joshua commanded the sun to stand still.

It looked like the sun standing still in the sky, actually the earth slowed it's rotation.
And Joshua didn't do it, God did it as a result of his prayer.

God made the sun stand still in the sky, Joshua didn't do it. God created the universe and all that is in it and has complete control over it. He can and does anything He wants to with it. Gives you some idea how totally awesome He is.

Not everything in the bible is meant to be taken literally. The point of all the stories in the Bible is to show the power of God and Jesus and the power of Christianity.

Basically do you believe in the power of God. If you do, then you can agree that if God wants, he can stop the sun from moving. It doesn't matter if it has happened before or not, he can do it.

The Bible doesn't explain how God accomplished this, just that he did it. That's enough for me considering God made the entire universe in the first place and set all the laws, he can do as he wills.

That's what the guy that wrote the bible saw. God did not write it. But I guess anything is possible with the power of God.
