I agree with you. Good parents don't forget about their child or would even think about leaving them alone in a car for even a minute. I think parents or caregivers should recieve heavier punishment. That should be considered man slaughter and it makes me sick that anyone could do that to a innocent child.

i definitely agree that they should have to face a man slaughter charge. i guess that the reason that they are sentenced to a lower amount is bc they are grieving the loss of there child. i just don't get it i mean if the person has like 5 kids and forgets one in there for like 30 min i can buy, it but after a few hours? and these are young children usually also who doesn't check on there 3 year old for hours i have a 2 year old and he is never out of sight for more than 10 min or so b4 i check on him and i always know where he is. i think it is generally a case of the kid fell asleep and the parent didn't want to wake them so let them nap in the car or they just figured the kid was contained and not bugging them. its crazy. i understand that parents are ppl and make mistakes but if a person is driving and looking at the radio and hits some one who is in the road they would get a tougher sentence than that but if a parent doesn't pay attention to a person that they are responsible for caring for for HOURS they get a lesser sentence that is just wrong. I'm not saying that makes them a bad person but they should have to answer for there actions.

You're exactly right. I have a one year old daughter and even if I go out by myself (which is hardly ever), I still have to heck the car seat to make sure she's not there. I just got so used to having her with me that I have to check. I was just talking to my husband about this issue today. I told him that I just don't get how somebody can forget that their child is in the car. Believe me I've forgotten to get a lot of things out of the car, but I never forget my child. Yes, these people do deserve harsher punishments. "I forgot" is not an excuse for leaving their child in the car. It's just like saying a murderer is going to get off because they're crazy. Come on now of course they're crazy, if they weren't they wouldn't have killed anybody, right?

Actually that was the dad and he got a few years. Anyway mothers get more time then fathers in jail for leaving their kids in a hot car. Mothers also get 2 more years added onto their sentence then fathers. It's because the mother is supposed to be there watching the children that she bore for 9 months not leave them in the car to die even for a few minutes. You should always take your kid in the store with you for safety reasons.

I couldn't agree more! What bugs me is when everyone says "don't judge the parents, they made an honest mistake"! How do you 'honestly' leave your child in the car for a few hours by accident? People in general, and judges in particular, need to stop sympathising with the parents and being too afraid to be 'judgemental', and start punishing the parents who kill an innocent, helpless child!

we had one in detroit where a mom"loosely pertaining here" went into the beauty salon to have extensions installed, and left 3 kids in the backseat of her car. FOR 7 HOURS, she claimed that she also forgot because she planned to have a babysitter, but babysitter bailed out earlier. She blamed the babysitter on it. She's sitting in jail/jackson prison for 10 years.
They should be sent outside all day with no sunscreen or protective clothing, and brought into a hot jail cell with hot food and soup to eat. Have her tubes tied and have a tape recording of crying children for ten hours. Unfortunately, prisoners are treated humanely. but they should have equal punishment for the offence.

I agree the sentence should be a lot stiffer. What it comes down to is the actual trial. It is tough for a jury to make a charge or manslaughter stick to a remorseful grieving parent. I would bet more often plea bargains are accepted to get any jailtime at all.
I truly believe what comes around goes around though and they will have to live with their stupid decision for the rest of their life, and that might be enough who knows!

I don't get it either. My husband and I were just discussing it tonight. How could it not be at least voluntary manslaughter. I've almost taken my kids to work with me but have never forgotten they were with me in the car when I got to my destination. Just think about how these human beings never had a chance to live their dreams. I just left a container of butter in my car but it's not going to effect someone's entire life.

I'm sure the loving parents that this happened too are thinking the same exact thing. Don't judge too harshly. It's awful that it happens but I just read an article that in most cases these are otherwise responsible, caring parents that made a horrible mistake. I don't think this is happening intentionally. Of course none of us believe that we could ever leave our kids in a car but it happened to a good friend of mine that is an amazing mother(her child was fine, only left for 10 min). Put yourself in their shoes. Not one of us is perfect and beyond a tragedy.

They should sit in un-air conditioned jail cells, and those sentences (sp?) are a joke.
That is sick, I don't understand how a parent could forget about their own child
