My 5 year old cat was told she has a mass in her abdomen and The vet said it was a 50/50 chance she could have cancer and that was it he sent us home with pain meds...He did not ultrasounds, biopsy nothing like that and said she could die within a month..Should we get a second opinion or let him do the surgery? It seemed like he was not that thourough...He would not try and rip us off since I used to work there

A 5 yo cat is still a young cat. My sister-in-laws cat had a stomach tumor, but he was 18 yo.

You don't sound like you are comfortable with his findings and conclusion based on his examination. If it were me, I would get a second opinion. If the second vet comes to the same conclusion, then you can do what you feel is best for you and the kitty.

Prayers and purrs to you and kitty.

Tumors in the stomach/liver/pancreas area are very hard to get out via surgery. One of mine has one attached to the side of his stomach, and it's a little bigger than the size of a golf ball. My vet didn't recommend operating because of where it was. We had the ultrasound and the x-ray and everything too, including a needle biopsy.

They may or may not be cancerous. They may or may not grow further. My vet said that I should be careful putting pressure on his ribs when picking him up, but just to wait and see. Most cancers give you only 6 months once diagnosed, but if they don't progress you can get more time.

The 'could' is only a guess. If she's acting ok and eating and drinking, then stay calm and enjoy your cat. If she's guarding the area (it hurts if you handle her anywhere on the ribs or belly) and is throwing up more often, then be cautious about how you lift and carry her, and it may be worth getting a second opinion, but they may not be able to tell you anything more.

If you are concerned, you can take her to a second vet for a consultation (minus the second ultrasound/biopsy,etc.). Get copies of your records for the second vet to look at and see what they say. But I think your vet has already done everything they could.

If you trust him, then I'm sure you could discuss this with him further. Discuss on things, like how he knows if there's a tumour, and what are the other things he suspects. If either way, the treatment is still surgery, then it could be why he recommended it in the first place. If you're not confident, you could ask him to take x-rays/ultrasound first. Otherwise, get a second opinion.

Hi I would say if you have th means to do so get your cat the surgery that way the mass can be removed and if it is or isn't anything major it can be gone and hlpfully your cat can move past this panful time. If worst comes to wrost they do surgery find it was something major that can't be helped they you did your best andyou can take your cat home and love it to pieves as long as you have it with you. Anything is worsth the chance if you have the means to try anything I would go for it. Best of luck to you!
