I've tried calling all three agencies, I've tried their web sites, and I've tried that annualcreditreport.com site--which just takes you back to those three agencies. The screens time out or something every time. Each person by law is supposed to get one free a year so what's the secret, anybody know? Every one of these sites is in-your-face with buy this or buy that--but so far I can find nothing to click on for the free one. Thanks!

Two days later: Thanks a bunch for all the help so far! I think my cellphone was malfunctioning when I tried to call (perhaps because of a storm), but I can't imagine why the computer screens seemed so hard to use when that never gives me a problem. I'll try again, but more suggestions would be welcome!

AnnualCreditReport.com is the only government approved site to receive your free reports. No credit card required.
Once you pick your state, fill out the information on the next page, you need to pick which bureau you want to get your report from, then answer a few id security questions.
Yes, you will be directed to each bureau's website. But as long as you got there by following the ACR link, it will still be free.
You can also call or print an order form and receive your free reports by mail. ACR's website has all the details.
The IRS' Free File Alliance follows the same principle. The IRS' FFA partners offer free tax preparation services, but you must follow the provided link in order to get free tax preparation. If you go the actual tax service without following the link provided by the IRS, you will eventually get charged for it.

The US Government has mandated that the three major credit bureaus offer the service to everyone in the United States once each year. The name of this site is www.annualcreditreport.com.
Since it is government mandated it requires a whole host of hoops to jump through. You do not actually get your credit scores, and it can take 7-10 days to receive the information. All in all not very consumer friendly. Guess that is what happens when a big company is required to do something they do not want to do.
Here is how I got my Credit Report and Score from all 3 bureaus for free.
I went to http://faqfaq.net/FreeCreditReport.html and signed up for their service.
It took like 3 minutes! They give you 7 Days for Free to try the service.
So I just canceled the next day after printing out everything I needed.
Easy and Free.

To get your free annual credit report online, you must go thru AnnualCreditReport.com. That site takes you to the individual credit bureaus -- you decide which bureau report you want. You can get all three at once or space them out one at a time every four month.
You can also send a letter requesting your free report.

You are entitled to get one. Go to freecreditreports.com and you will get one, although all 3 agencies are required to send you theirs. The only bad thing about the site I mentioned is that you sign up for them and get them free for a period of time, if you don't cancel you'll start getting charged for them.

I go thru www.annualcreditreport.com and it takes you to each agencies website. Then it asks you a series of questions to verify your identity and then it allows you to view your report. Unlike freecreditreport.com I never had to enter an account number or anything...it just allowed me to view my report.
