I didn't know this was the case. I have a tremendous amount of respect on western boxing - I wouldn't stand toe-to-toe and punch it out with a boxer.
The only other reason I can think of is due to the so-called "boxer's fracture" which is a common nickname given to the break one suffers by punching an object too hard without a closed fist. I know in boxing that the hands are taped and made into a fist inside the glove as to avoid any fatigue by consciously keeping a clenched fist. The problem is, though, that this can translate into an actual fight where the boxer has not trained to keep a tight fist and can suffer a hand break.
That is no excuse to look down on boxing, but could be a reason some do.

I don't think we look down on boxing. I simply think that many people have become bored with the lack of good fights/fighters and the inability to watch boxing without paying exorbitant pay per view costs. There is also the fact that boxing has been labeled as pretty corrupt.
Of course this will probably reverse at some point under good management. At the rate that the UFC is growing, I would not discount Dana White et. al. from buying up boxing and transforming it at some point.

Hm. I didn't. Actually, I think most serious martial artists respect boxing. In fact, I would like to take up boxing for a few months.
Boxers have EXCELLENT power chains, and there is most definitely a certain science to boxing. They train to hit in a specific way, to generate as much power as possible. And the best thing about boxing is-- most laymen can relate to it, in their own weird way. I mean, think about popular movies like Rocky, Cinderella Man, and Million Dollar Baby.
The problem may be that boxing is a sport, and many traditional martial artists don't like the idea of fighting for sport/money. Me personally, I say to each his own.

Probably because most boxing matches these days aren't as exciting as the ones during the golden years of boxing. I myself used to ignore boxing in my youth because they didn't throw kicks, this was when I used to think Bruce Lee was God(actually.... come to think of it, I still do) : P It wasn't until I saw the Marvelous Marvin Hagler vs Tommy"The Hitman" Hearns fight that I became a boxing convert. Today, I think some knowledge in the fundamentals of boxing is a must for serious martial artists.

i didnt know martial artist did. well maybe more traditional martial artist who dont believe you should fight for money/sport only self defense. i think many mix martial artist respect boxers as many of em cross train in it. some boxers look down on mma so maybe thats a reason why some martial artist may not like boxing(like mayweather calling it nothing but a fad, however roy jones gives mma respect.
i train in thai boxing and we train the same time as the boxers and i have nothin but respect for em

Personally I went to a boxing gym, and was amazed at the conditioning they endured. I studied "Traditional TKD" and I am tired of ppl laughing at that as well. But boxing helped me to close the gap the Tae Kwon Do teaches. One of the golden glovers asked me to sparr and I hit him with a punch that "dazed" him. Being the only white guy in there seemed to matter very little, when everyone was cheerin me on. But I dropped my hands, asked him if he was ok. Then he said you hit like my grandma, black me eye, break my nose you can't hurt me. And then his conditioning prove to be way better than mine as his jab seemd to me like a yoyo that kept bouncing off of my face... a great experience and much respect to well trained boxers.

its been my experience that its the other way around. i know plenty of martial artists who cross-train in boxing to supplement their MA training, but i rarely see boxers who take martial artists seriously.
but to answer your question, its for the same reason that people come on here to bad mouth every MA they dont train in. their ego's are too big for them to acknowledge that other people or disciplines might be on par with whatever they do.

1)It's boring.
2)It's too easy to win by running away from an opponent, and jabbing to outpoint him (like Mayweather).
3)It's too limited in how you can even punch an opponent.
4)It's TOO EXPENSIVE!!!
5)There's no energy from the crowd.
6)There's no submissions.
7)There no way to tell who would win in a fight, even after the "fight".
8)One boxing event- ONE fight
MMA event 7-16 (depending on the show)
9)Anymore it's as FAKE as wrestling
10)Every fight in the last 10 years that had ANY hype behind it........SUCKED!
I could make more reasons, but I don't think i have to.
