I'm going to tell you something crazy. I, for years, always fantasized me doing crazy martial arts stuff... always. I idolized Jackie Chan to the point where I WISH I WAS him.
I asked my parents if I could do martial arts, and my mother said NO. She told me, it was a boyish thing to do.
I got so upset, I gave up my crazy fantasy's.
Well, only a few days ago... when my younger sister asked if SHE could do Karate, my mother said yes to her. And I ended up being signed up, alongside my sister to do it. (It shocked me quite a bit). I then found out that the class is mixed with age differences - people who're between 5 years old and 75 years old! I figure, if all these people are willing to learn it, and do it - so can I. And so can you.
Don't worry about everyone else, just go and do it because what matters is that you're interested in doing it!
Now then, I gotta go... but I hope you go for it. I got my first Karate lesson tomorrow, and I'm scared. It's been so long since I even thought of Marital arts, and now... I'm doing it. I'll be in a mixed class, and I'm 17 - going 18 in 2 months time.
Saiyonara!
PS: you got nothing to lose.

Hey, I'm a counsellor in training and I just did Martial Arts camp this past week. The senseis (black belts) are 11 and 14 years old so yeah a little late but obviously you're not the only one. I think you should still join even if there are little kids, I think you would rise up fast because the kids who are like 6 to 10 are really slow with learning new things, like they got their first stripe on their white belt in one week and my friend who's about 13 learned everything they did in one week on his first day so.. give it a shot. Visit your local karate people and ask them.

Most 'dojo's' have young adult classes in the evening, when school is out and people home from work. Start doing your homework, i.e. which martial art form your interested in, what their monthly fees are and what does it include, PLUS figure in the cost of gi's, belts/sashes, testings (for advancement to a higher belt), sparring gear, and tournaments. Then take all your info., and present it to your parents. That way, your not just telling them, your SHOWING them. The less work your parents have to do, the better your chances of them letting you join. Good luck.

As far as your training is concerned, you are a little kid. Humbling yourself can be scary, I know, but swallow your pride, lower yourself, and in the end you will be rewarded with the benefits of your training.
Truth is that most karate practitioners are kids...which you still are at 14/15.

Unfortunately, most martial arts schools will be filled with little kids (That is where the money is). The school SHOULD have a time set up for adults only, but you are not quite an adult yet.
Take the free lesson most schools give and pick the best one.

Try convincing them with how karate will be worth the time, money, etc. If thats the problem. Maybe you can research nearby places with a karate place for your age?
Good luck.

i agree with John C. I persoally though don't teach kids because of this problem. However, most schools have an Adult class set aside. If you can't get into that because you're 14, then take the kid class for a few years.

Research the studios in your area. If you live near a decent size city, plan on traveling there for serious classes. Save the money yourself for the lessons, and your parents will take you seriously.
