Most weddings that do not have a reception are very small, intimate affairs with only the bride grooma nd maybe a few witnesses.
Most wedding do have some sort of reception. If you are having a larger wedding you may want to consider just a cocktail hour reception where you can visit with everyone for a little while and that is it.
If you don't want a reception at all, I suggest you elope! That way you dn't hurt anyones feelings.

No, but I have been to a wedding reception without a wedding.
Actually the couple had been together for almost 10 years. They were married by a judge a month before, but only their parents and two best friends (the witnesses) knew. They had a Picnic-In-The-Park reception, but called it their First Annual Summer Fun Party. It was not until the guests saw the couple in their vintage wedding dress and tux that it was known what the real celebration was for.

A wedding without a reception is unheard of. I would never go. Think about it, the ceremony only lasts 20 minutes to half hour and then it's all over. What do I do now? Seems like a waste of time. Bride and Groom shouldn't expect people to come to a celebration if there in fact is none.

Two years ago I was associated with a couple that got married in a beautiful gazebo in a community park (a morning ceremony).
The Bride was a well paid professonal and the Groom was a well paid professional, they could have had a lavish wedding and reception if they wanted one.
The Bride did not wear a gown and the Groom did not wear a tuxedo.
There were no attendants.
The Bride held a bouquet that her brother made for her at his florist shop the day before.
About thirty friends and relatives stood around the couple during the ceremony (the Bride and Groom were in the center of the gazebo).
After the ceremony the couple got in their car and drove to the airport. It was their intention to be in a beach chair sipping a tropical drink by 6PM that night.
No reception . . no bubbles . . no wedding gifts . . and no champagne toast.

Don't some people get wedding invitations, but no reception invitation at a different location (although with a receiving line at the site of the wedding?) It would be rude, but I think I have seen it happen.

If you have guests, there should always be some type of reception. It may range from cake and punch served at the church hall, to an elegant dinner at a hotel . . . but one should always do something if one has guests.
Now if you are talking bride, groom, bride's parents, groom's parents and no others, then fine . . . do not have a reception. But if anyone else at all is invited, then you need to serve something, even if it is just cookies and punch following the ceremony.

Nope. Not once in over forty years of attending weddings.
The receptions have ranged from elegant plated meals and hours of dancing to informal picnic lunches, to cake and punch, but there's always been something.
It's a wedding, and ought to be celebrated at least a little.

Yes; It was a lovely wedding, but the bride and groom couldn't afford a reception. So they and their immediate family (mom's and dad's) simply went out to eat.

Nope. Never have. My sister had a morning wedding though (10am ceremony) with a luncheon reception. It turned out lovely at a minimal cost.
