Absolutely. For A to B transportation, the Focus will definitely do the trick.
Who knows? It might even be fun! - My Grandma has a 2003 Focus, and whenever I visit, I always have to take it somewhere cause it's such a fun little car to drive. The engine was designed by Mazda, so it's reliable and fun to rev, the car isn't bad looking, and you're looking at almost 30 miles to the gallon. You can also get a used one VERY cheap, as Fords tend to have terrible resale value.
Best of luck, and make your first car something that you really enjoy - The memories you'll make with the first car that you really own will stick with you forever :)
Take care.

Honestly, I am a Ford person but I am not a fan of the Focus. This is the first and ONLY time I would ever say to go with like a Honda. Plus the resale value on the car would be greater for when you wanted to upgrade.

focus's are good little cars. bout as safe as any other small car though so don't get in wrecks. got 2 different friends that have owned the same ones for about 7 yrs with only minor problems. typically just maintenance issues. and i have driven one of them myself if i was to buy a small car i would consider a focus

the focus would be a good car for that ,their not that bad of a car a Nissan would also make you a good car,and they can be found everywhere these days but focus isn't a bad car,no worse than some of the others on the road, good luck .

The first few years of the focus were very bad for quality and re-calls. ( I would guestimate the 1998 to 2001 model year timeframe you should avoid). But they turned it around very well and in fact it's one of the best compact cars you can get now.

NOOOO... I owned one and so did my sister (both 2003). It broke down every 2 weeks. I got rid of mine in 6 months and my sister within a year. When they actually worked they were really zippy and drove well but it wasn't worth not having my car a lot. Almost every dealership will have one on their lot.
The best car I've ever had was a Corolla. Chevy Lumina is pretty good too, that's what I have now.

the ford focus has the most recalls in automotive history, that should tell you something.
