Is the chemical in my brain alter?
Is it too late to go back to the way I used to be, without the medication?

I never had depression. The doctor mislead me, and I trusted him.

The only reason for the medication was to make me stop and think before I talked. At that time, I didn't know better that there was no real medications existed. As I confronted him, he obviously misdiagnosed me. I was furious.

I take Depakote and know that you can't just stop taking it. Your Doctor will taper you off the med if he did misdiagnose you.

No, the chemicals in your brain are not altered. Depakote is a mood stabilizer that keeps you from having extreme mood swings.

Your Doctor must have had a reason for prescribing Depakote. Are you sure you want to go back to the way you used to be?

Please have a talk with your Doctor. You would be risking serious side effects if you just stop taking it.

Depakote is not the type of drug you want to go off of abruptly and without you Dr's advice. Trust me, I've been there and it can have some really nasty side effects which could make depression even worse. Depakote does not alter the chemicals in your brain. It makes you more even and able to live a normal life. Please talk to your Dr. It doesn't sound like the two of you are not on the same page. Not only could you seek a second opinion, but you could also talk to your Dr. about alternative medications which can help you live a happy and healthy life. Depression is nothing to be ashamed of. It is no different than diabetes, heart problems or asthma (just examples). The bad stigma that was once associated with mental health issues is slowly but surely going away. Be proud of yourself that you know enough to get help and seek advice before doing something as dangerous as going off a med without a Dr's. permission. Talk to your Dr. Talk to another Dr., but whatever you do don't put yourself in jeopardy by going off a med you have been on for 5 five years. You know what they say "when in doubt, check it out". Good luck and love yourself. Pat yourself on the back for seeking out help!!!

Don't do ANYTHING without discussing this with your doctor. It's too important. If the doctor diagnosed you properly, the illness you have doesn't go away, and if you stop the medicine, it will be a trip to the mental hospital before you can get your feet under you again. The reason you had to start this medicine is because the chemicals in your brain are not balanced properly. Your body doesn't make enough of one hormone and too much of another. This medication straightens this out.

Go talk to your dr. Tell him you want to try to live without the medicine, and make sure he explains to you why you need that medicine or why you'll be okay without it. Ask him to rediagnose your condition and explain the treatment options you have.

Sweetheart, I know you don't like taking meds, and I don't either, but I tried to get rid of my meds, and believe me, there is a hell on earth that's almost too deep to crawl out of. It's absolutely horrible. Never again. I'll stay on my meds forever if I can live a normal life.

If you were truly misdiagnosed or have outgrown a temporary condition, you can be weaned off the medication. Do NOT just stop taking anything like that. Get a schedule for tapering off the dose from the doctor who said you do not have the original problem and follow it.

Wow five years to complain. It is the point where more medication can reduce the brain power. Good luck ...you have to go through tough times to be free of meds now and learn about the recovery methods for depression and all the rest of the mysteries of life. Get a friend who is able to show how the loners have to survive and learn the secrets of the winners.

You can stop using it anytime. I did. My doctor said my headaches was a form of epilepsy. He was wrong. I was just having a allergic reaction to a chemical in house cleaning products. I have not had any problems, but I'm no doctor neither are you so I would talk to one. Maybe get a second opinion

First what was your diagnoses? The medication can be for seizures or to help one fall asleep with out the drug dependencies or withdraws. I suffered from depression which interfered with my sleep. My Doctor put me on depakote to help me sleep with out any side effects. When I chose to get off the medicine I quit with out any problems. Ask your doctor first.

first find a different doctor. Then, Depakote is a drug that *MUST* be titrated off of. Meaning you need to gradually "wean" off of it. If you don't it could cause some serious, serious health problems.

Once this drug is out of your system, it's gone. Depakote is usually prescribed for seizure sufferer's. What an idiotic thing to do to someone.

Some people should not be allowed to practice medicine. I'm sorry for you. :(

But there shouldn't be any long-term effects from it, as long as you titrate off of it.
