Brown rice is actually rice (maybe Tin Can Sailor is thinking of wild rice, which is a grain and not rice at all). Brown rice is brown because it still has its outer coating of bran, germ, and endosperm (the parts with the fiber, nutrients, and healthy oils) still on it. White rice has been polished so that the oil, which is quick to spoil, comes off. This may be why your brown rice tastes funny -- it may be rancid. Start with a new box, or buy it bulk so you can smell it first. Whatever you have left over, you can store in the freezer. If you keep it at room temperature, it will spoil within a few months.

The other suggestions for cooking are great -- just wanted to be sure you're not trying to improve something that's beyond saving.

Enjoy!

Here are the instructions:

Put brown rice and water together in a pot with a lid. Use the ratio of 1.5 cups water to 1 cup rice. I normally make 3c rice with 4.5c water for a single batch. Add a dash of olive oil and rice vinegar and some salt.

Set the heat to maximum, and bring the rice/water to a boil uncovered. Then put the lid on the pot, and reduce the heat to low/simmer. If your lid has a steam valve, keep it closed. Let the rice simmer for 20 minutes.

Turn off the heat, and let the rice sit in the covered pot for another 10 minutes. It’s OK if you let the rice sit longer than 10 minutes (20 or 30 minutes is fine too), but don’t let it go any less. I prefer my rice to be slightly chewy, not mushy, so I usually remove the lid after 10 minutes.

Eat and enjoy. Be careful when you remove the lid, since a lot of steam may escape when you do.
This works for white rice too.

After the rice is cooked, I normally scoop some into a bowl, and mix it with a little tamari (soy sauce) and 1-2 tablespoons of sesame seeds. The sesame seeds add a lot of flavor to the rice. Sometimes I’ll eat it with steamed veggies both of which can be prepared while the rice is cooking.

Add a little butter or a teaspoon of maple syrup to the water. I've never noticed a wierd taste to my brown rice. Are you sure you got Brown rice and not WILD rice? Two different things entirely. Also, rice tends to take on the flavor of whatever it's cooked with so you can add whatever sauce that you're used to into the water as you cook it and it'll take on that flavor as well. LOL (((Rae)))

What "Pink and Green" said...but until you (and possibly your family/friends) gets accustomed to it, split the dish between brown rice and the rice to which you are accustomed to eating--and cook it in a flavorful broth or boullion. The neat thing about brown rice is the texture; it has a "chew/snap" factor that actually is kind of neat once you get used to it.

Someone has to love those who can eat it completely unadorned...but I can't eat any other rice now. The taste is only weird for us because we are not used to certain whole foods anymore. Adjustments--mentally--are a necessary ingredient...so good for you!

Favorite spices or herbs? Add those to the cooking water or broth and veggies. And don't be shy about embellishing the rice after it is cooked. Experimentation is fun and often the way to good health!

I don't think brown rice tastes weird. But you can try sticking a bouillion cube in the water when cooking it. Also, sometimes I'll reheat cooked rice by sauteeing it in oil and garlic or some other spice.

Brown rice has its own unique taste. If you are expecting it to taste like white rice it never will. Brown rice is not really rice. It is different grain. You will have to get used to the taste or not use it. You can soften the taste by mixing it with rice. I always mix brown rice with rice to tone it down.
