I first got one when i was fourteen, i never really thought about it, i just got it. Having friends that have had them done at an older, more sensible age, i can tell you the hardest part is getting the first tat. You worry about every little thing, the pain, the style, the location on your body. Many people cannot get over this and therefore never get a tat. But once you have had your first one, you realize it's not so bad (the pain), you'll probably end up wanting more...
I have ten tats, for me the worst part is when the tat is healing and it dries up, it gets all itchy for a few days, it drives me crazy.

When I got my first tattoo, I was screaming in agony... cause they took all of my money and beat my wallet dry. That's the worst part. After that is the addiction. I got my first tattoo at 15, a smaller one on my shoulder blade. A year later I was back getting some on my knuckles. By 17 I had full sleeves, and when I turned 18 a couple days ago, I had one on my shin. I want more, I might do sleeves on my shins.

I knew what I wanted. I knew where to put them. Pain? No big deal to me. That hardest part is the wait. I picked an artist who was book 6-7 months ahead. Got my first one last August and I booked in April. The wait was the hardest thing I went through. Just got my 2nd one done last Friday that I started in December...She managed to get me in this past Tuesday for number 3. Yeah, paying for them was a painful. I have about $3000 invested on my skin now. But I have to tell ya, it's the waiting for the next one that kills me!

The hardest part is picking a tattoo that won't look stupid in 20,or 50 years. Also do you want your kids asking you "who's Paris?" Pain is nothing. Placement is important- a tattoo can sink a job interview[if you have one like Mike Tyson].

the best thing to do is to look within yourself. what means something to you? what has a significant influence in your life? that is always the best factor in deciding a tattoo. i have a memorial tattoo and i absolutely love it. i also have a family heritage tattoo that i adore. you should think of a subject or a theme and go from there. DEFINITELY don't get a flash tattoo (the tattoos that are on the walls at parlors) because tons of other people have the same tattoo! get something unique just for you. and stay away from tribal!

The hardest part for me was placement. I wanted to have them...but not in places that could be seen all the time. Also...hurts the wallet! lol.
Mike is right tho. The pain is addictive. When I got my first one I was like no more. Then like less than a year later I had 2 more lol. I love it!

Deciding what to get. If you feel passionate enough about what you are getting the pain will be less and well worth it. If you don't get something that is personal for you then you will regret getting it later.

I can only speak for myself since everyones reaction is different. It was the scabbing that did me in! I was going nuts ... Lotion was my best friend and I was glad the weather permitted capris so that nothing rubbed against it. Yikes, those were painful moments ... The pain was bearable and worth it but I could have done without the horrible scabby phase.

Paying for it.
It makes my wallet hurt.
=(
EDIT: Also it was really tough for me to get the artist to draw up a good depiction of what I wanted. It took ages for me to get my artist to draw my swallow the way I wanted it.
