All numbers that start with 555 are fake (Except 555-1212. That's information).
The "555" gambit was created in 1973--no matter where you are, dialing the 555 number plugs you into directory assistance, where a legion of professionally trained operators awaits to answer the particular crankiness of your call. 555 isn't an FCC regulation, but simply a convenient creation of Ma Bell.

Well, it used to be that all 555 numbers were fake, but that is not so anymore. Some legitimate business have started having these numbers. These numbers were originally set aside for TV and entertainment purposes so that people who had the numbers the TV said would not be bugged.
Now the entertainment industry is being forced to use numbers between 555-0100 to 555-0199.

Yup, they are fake. They can have 555 in the number, but it can't start with 555. For example, it can be 1-800-555-0971, or 972-5559. It is generally for movies, etc so that they can use a number without giving away someone's real number and getting sued for doing so. Good luck with stuff!

555 is used in TV and movies now because people actually use to call the numbers they saw or heard while watching. The only real 555 number I know of is information, which is 555-1212 even though you can still use 411.

All 555 numbers are used strictly for the Movies, that is so "real" people dont get calls..... just like what happened with the most famous phone number "867-5309"

if you dial Area code 555-1212 you will get the local 411. So its kinda real!

no. they are real. i work at dominos and ive had a person call whos number is actually 555-5555. but there are different area codes. there might not be 555 numbers in your area code.

they are used in movies and TV shows (probably), so they have to be fake... you wouldn't want to be a celeb and give out your cell phone number on the number 1 box office hit would you?
