A father has pledged that his younger daughters will not get married until his eldest is. She is a shrew, finding flaws in everything and fighting with her sisters. The father offers a substantial dowry and the younger daughter and her courtiers try to find someone to marry, but every one they find is driven off. Meanwhile, the courtiers are pretending to be tutors to get close to the younger sister.
A man comes to town declaring he wishes to marry as long as he can marry wealth. He is introduced to Catherine and begins responding to her shrill screaming by praising her pleasant speaking voice. Over her protests, he marries her.
The balance of the play involves him taking her back to his place including a scene on the road where he beats a donkey who stumbles (thats once) and says the same thing to her. In his home, he refuses to let her wear beautiful stuff or each delightful foods because they are not good enough for her.
In the end, she returns with him to her father's house where the 3 husbands are challenged to call their wives and the two younger sisters refuse, losing money for their husbands, while Kate comes and gives a famous speech about the proper role of women.
