My sister wants to dye her hair and she read the directions and it says you need dry unwashed hair. She has baby oil in it, will that affect the dying or her hair?

If you have baby oil in your hair the dye will not take. It will just slide right off. The baby oil is covering your hair so the dye won't actually get onto your hair. You do need to have dry unwashed hair so that the dye will actually get on the hair and stay on it long enough to take.

The answer's in the question! You need dry, unwashed hair. That means clean, free of additives and styling products, and dry. Color takes better if you haven't washed or put product in for 24 hours. So choose a day when nothing is going on. Wash her hair well and dry it and let her hang out for a day (with a hat if she needs it). ANY product that coats your hair, which includes oil-- I assume this is a shine serum?-- hair sprays, leave-in conditioners, etc. can cause color to bond unevenly. Since you don't want patchy color, ditch the oil.

Just a side note: determine what the oil is for. Is it for shine? Weight? Conditioner? There is some product on the market that is designed to address any of these situations. Baby oil is not designed for hair and can cause weakening and breaking of the hair shaft as well as irritation on the scalp, particularly if you are in the sun. Please go to a beauty supply store and speak to a licensed cosmetologist-- they are happy to help!

Yes it will affect the dye. The oil will keep it from dying the hair. Her hair should be clean and dry when she puts the dye on.

She should probabally wash the baby oil out 1st and then let it dry befoe applying the dye, I think the oil would stop some of the dye from penetrating the hair folicle.

It's not going to absorb the dye as well. I think it might be a waste of an expensive box of dye. It would not hurt anything, though.

Errr putting baby oil in your hair is disgusting, if you want it smooth, use shine serum.

As for colouring it, shampoo it and dry it off. Dont condition.

Otherwise the colour wont take evenly.

No, it is not safe. With baby oil coating the hair cuticle color will not be able to stick on it. Or if i does stick it will be very uneven.
