You`re right on with the .22Mag, I prefer hollow points myself.

I have a useless Win 9422 in 22 mag. In my state, they've banned the 22 mag for coon hunting to cut down on the deer poaching. So I stick with my Win 63 22LR. C'est la vie.

The main rule to knock down is slow quick expanding bullets.

I feel you will get better results with the 22 LR if you were to try the subsonic hollow points.
If you stop to consider that unless you hit solid bone on the coon with the normal high velocity 22 LR round nose bullet the projectile is moving too fast and blowing through the coon and not delivering any nock down energy, as you would like.
Where as the slower subsonic hollow points will deliver maximum nock down with out doing too much damage to the hide as the high velocity hollow point will damage a lot more coon hides and still over penetrate.
The 22 magnum is too high velocity and is even more apt to over penetrate if you don’t hit heavy bone and not give reliable nock down.

The exception to the high velocity rule of over penetration
You would find that the new .17 calibers with the little Ballistic tip ammo would deliver maximum nock down, due to the fact the little bullet will not exit the coon but explode in side of him delivering 100% bullet energy to the coon.
The little .17 will also not over damage the coon hides because it does not exit to my experience.

A lot of bullet energy is lost when the bullet exit’s the intended target.

I have shot coons with a 223 using 55 grain Ballistic Tip ammo and flipped the coon 15 to 20 feet out of a tall tree with out creating an exit wound, turned the inside of the coon to Jello but did not damage the hide at all because the ballistic tip explodes inside the coon.

Ive never not killed one with a .22 LR, but ive had several start running at me. I hunt with a dog now but last year i just used a sptolight. I shot oen out of a tree and it started soming after me. I had three friends, one with a spotlight and two with a flashlight and one with another .22 LR. He was running at me and there were two lights trying to stay on him and two full magazines of .22 bullets trying to hit him. I hit him the one time coming out of the tree and my friend hit him in the head at about 10 or 12 yards. Now my dog stops him at the tree if they come at me. I try not to let him fight them too much because its not nesacary because i have gun with me and he isnt the brightest candle on the cake. He normally ends up with more damage minus the bullet holes.
