Because cows are fed corn by the dairy farmers. The price of corn is rising because of increased demand. Corn is in high demand because it it used to make Ethanol, a gasoline substitute. Ethanol is is high demand because of the desire to decrease gasoline use. Ethanol doesn't have to be imported from the middle east and burns cleaner, so it's better for both the environment anf the war on terror.
So...you can blame or thank both Al Gore and George Bush for the increase in corn prices, which causes the cost of milk to rise because the cows now have to share their corn with Exxon and Mobil.

I work at a grocery store and our dairy delivery place gave us some newspaper propaganda about why all dairy (including eggs) prices are rising so quickly. Supposedly, the price of fuel for transport is only a small part of it. They are also blaming shortage of corn (due to the manufacture of ethanol fuel) and the fact that because there is a war going on we are shipping powdered milk and condensed milk overseas. I guess that causes a milk shortage. Me, myself thinks this is a bunch of baloney, however, I guess I can see a wee bit of truth to it.

There are several reasons.
1. Governmental price controls
2. Cost of gas to transport milk. which also raises the cost of transportation for the grain to feed the cows.
3. Cost of grain itself to feed the cows due to increased production of ethanol.
4. General price of oil used to make the plastic containers it comes in.
5. Etc, etc you get the point.
It is the same reason a Coke and a bottled water costs about the same. You are paying for the container.

The dairy industry is ripping people off. There are many things we can have which give us what milk does. For example, you can use powdered milk in recipes which is much cheaper and has no difference insofar as taste goes. Also, French toast with or pancakes with powdered milk is fine, cakes, cereal.
Also, use some on sale soy milk. I find that the large Chinese groceries have soy milk cheaper than others in general. Also, Pathmark has their own brand and it;s good tasting and very good for us.
We drink way too much cow's milk.

Maybe there's less milk available because the cows formed a union. One cow gives milk while 5 cows stand in a circle around it talking about grass and how cold the milking machine is.

The Midwest is flooded and the South is in a drought. Both areas are not able to raise their own food and are having to buy more expensive feed. Add to that the fuel prices and farmers are having to raise prices to survive.

well first gas prices are differently the bid problem. and then there's the decreasing in cow farms. well they still need to make money so they raise the prices to make up for for the decrease in money from losing farms.
