Hi there...
I currently have an 8 week old foster kitten that may be going to Canada for her forever home. She hasn't had her first set of shots yet (but it will be done next week at the shelter) but to be able to make this work, the family would have to drive down on the 8th of August, but I believe that she will still be too young for the rabies vaccination which she has to have to be able to cross the border.
I'll be able to talk to the shelter director on Monday... but I was curious if there's a rabies vaccination that a then, 9 week old kitten can receive without it causing problems?
thanks so much!

Well, that's the problem.... the lady that may be coming to get her gets off of work for vacation on the 6th, and it would be a two day drive to come get her, then another two day trip back, and this is the only vacation she'll have for a while... it'll pretty much be the only time she can come and get her, otherwise we'd just wait long enough for her to get the vaccine.

Puppies and kittens under 12 weeks of age cannot have a "legal"rabies vaccine due to 1.) their immature immune system 2.) no studies done on the vaccines effectiveness on younger animals.
I'd check with the border control and ask, but I'm pretty sure the law only applies to cats & dogs 12 weeks and older. They may however require a health certificate from a vet stating the kitten is healthy.
Your vet may also know the answer to this question so give them a call.

It is commonly accepted that pets under the age of 12 weeks should not yet receive the rabies vaccination. Their immune systems are still fluctuating between the mother's natural immunity and the immunities we give them (via vaccines). Your best bet is to have the forever home wait until the kitten is 12 weeks old, have the kitten vaccinated against rabies, then allow it to cross the border.

Good luck!

Make sure you have all vet records with her, the border needs to see physical records on every animal.
