SSI is never taxed, and no refund is available based on the SSI payments.

Social Security benefts can be taxed. However, a person receiving only SSI and/or Social Security would never pay income taxes. They would not be required to file taxes, and no refund is available.

The only way someone on social security would get a refund is

(1) if they had other income and overpaid their taxes on that

(2) if they had taxes withheld from their social security payments and didn't owe that much in taxes, or

(3) they had other income, earned income, and qualified for an earned income credit.

If their only income was from social security, and they didn't have money withheld, then they wouldn't get a refund. And if someone's only income is SSI, they wouldn't get a refund.

Last year there was a one time telephone excise tax refund even if you weren't required to file but it was only $30-$50.

Otherwise, if you are not having taxes withheld from the social security and it is your only income, there are no refunds to be had.

Usually social security or SSI is the source of income. You are only taxed if you go over a certain gross. Most of the time no taxes are paid. So no refund.
