My little cat has a sore under his chin .. the fur is gone and is bloody ... it is getting bigger.

I think I see him scratching there.

He is our first cat, so we are new at this.

I've bought sentry flea, tick and mosquito stuff and a medicated stick that (shaped like a deodorant container). I don't want to apply these until I hear from someone that this is a good course or not.

Your thoughts or suggestions. Thanks!

Two things have shown up on ours that sound like this.

If it's less than 1/2" across, it's most likely an advanced zit/blackhead that got infected, puffed up and was burst when he started scratching. It'll heal up in 3 days.

If it's bigger, and really is a lump, it could be an abscess from a cat bite. One he scratched open to relieve the pressure, and pus will be coming out of it too.

Use a kleenex to blot the discharge, and a damp or wet rag to dab on to clean the area. You'll be able to get a better look at it this way.

If the rest of his jaw is fine, and he's got no nasal discharge, he probably doesn't need to be seen by a vet.

Mosquitoes and fleas won't cause this. Putting chemicals onto the wound would NOT be a good thing. Let it air dry and keep it clean.

It could be an abcess, try washing it with a mixture of half water, half hydrogen peroxide, and by washing I mean, holding the kitty down and perhaps just misting it in there gently with a spray bottle or perhaps letting it drip in there with a wet wash cloth that you have soaked in the mixture and you gently wring it out over the cat's chin over the sore. If it is an abcess, he will scratch at it. I used to have a cat that got those under his chin, they were very unpleasant, and this is how we treated them.

my cat has/had this, too. it's caused by your cat scratching himself due to, what is probably, fleas.

wash the infected spot with a warm washcloth and a mild antibacterial soap. your cat probably won't like this, but if you don't do this, you have a higher risk of your cat infecting it with his claws (which have been in nasty places).

you should probably stick with frontline or advantage flea applications. you can buy them at any pet supermarket, and they are the best thing for your cat. using something kind of off the wall may lead in your cat getting sick. do not use sentry. the nrdc put it on the watch list for dangerous pet products. it is toxic to cats and dogs.

i hope this helped you out.

i wouldnt use anything but a cleaning with hydrogen peroxide and a qtip and once that is dry some regular neosporin once again with a qtip ...apply often as you can ....i would NEVER use any flea medication on my cat unless it was from the vet like frontline or advantage...my cat almost died from the cheap over the counter stuff its pure poision trust me and if that medicated stick you bought has any human medicine in it like aspirin or pain reliever that is toxic to cats so dont use it...neosporin however is safe on cats

please be very careful with over the counter flea and tick products, most of them can be toxic and even deadly to cats!
if you have a flea problem, go to your vet's office and buy some frontline or advantage for cats. as for the sore, there could be a lot of things causing that. the best thing to do is take your cat to the vet.

Well you have to watch his eating habits and potty habits. If all of that stays normal most likely he will take care of it. If that changes and the temp in his nose changes like a fever then he needs the vet. I guess the little tike looked up some tom and said. "O.K. Bring it!"

i have used this method many times
bathe him "good luck" then rub veggie oil on the wound .it will not heart the the cat but it will relieve
him .so he won't scratch..ussually 2-3 days keep putting on veggie oil"no you don't have to keep bathing him"he will do that"
if it does not clear up in a week .call a vet.
