Well Gamo makes some PBA pellets that increase velocity and penetration are a good choice. PBA pellets wont deform like lead.
On a 1000fps airgun the PBA pellets will deliver 1250fps and a 50% increase in penetration. Problem is they only make them in .177

the difference isn't enough for you to spend more money on the .22. the .177 will easily kill chipmunks, birds, squirrels, and rabbits. get GAMO master point pellets. comes in a yellow and black tin, 250 count. but for just plinking just get the flat tipped ones they are pretty cheap.

The 22 is a little heavier bit if you don't hit he right spot neither will do the job.

What is more important is the muzzel velocity of the weapon.
If the feet per second at the muzzel is the same, the .22 would give more shock value

I'd go for the .22. It is just a little bigger, so will hit more kill zone.

its not the size of the bullet its the grains in it pick a higher grained bullet -if at the same grains of powder 22. will kill better
