3 weeks ago I had quadruple bypass. Everything is going well. However, at the bottom of the incision, there is what appears to be 1/3 inch of "fishing line" protruding.

Is this absorbal stitches?

Hey Jeff, glad to hear that all is well. I have been thinking about you.

What you are talking about is either an absorbable stitch or some adhesive that is starting to peel away. When I had my CABG done there were no stitches. The sternum incision and the incisions on my legs were closed using "Glue". The smaller openings were closed with just bandages. If the "string" is clear, it is most likely glue.

You might just give a call to your doctor to be sure.

This "fishing string" is definitely a suture. This is most likely an absorbable suture, but you should ask your doctor.

Sometimes your skin sloughs (as it normally does) before your suture absorbs. So once the remaining portion of your suture absorbs or becomes exposed it does fall out. Alternatively your doctor can cut the portion hanging out extracutaneously.

If it's off-white, chances are it's the end of a long running subcuticular suture, and it's absorbable. That's not certain, but it's a darned good bet.

Of course. Most doctors pick up used fishing line from the beaches and use it to sew up wounds.

It`s not normal but safe. Doctor can remove it.
