People on both sides of the issue have expressed concern with the fact our government seems to leave people in the dark on any types of reforms they vote on.So I have an idea.Instead of only calling to say you do or don't support something how about calling or writing and TELLING them we want some input on this issue. That they need to put everything on the table months before hand and allow citizens to vote on it.Wouldn't that be more of what our country is based on than having a few making ALL decisions affecting us?
I know already some are going to say that's why we elect our Senators etc.but they don't always represent the whole either. Many pander to special interest groups.I think with certain issues Americans should have the right to vote on them.Especially when it's issues that affect our livelyhoods and life styles.
What do you think?

Yes. There has to be a sensible solution. Voting is not always the solution. Everyone agrees that there's a problem. But to come up with a real solution, without racism or special interests has been very difficult.

Yes, as long as it takes into consideration the needs of citizens, not corporations. I could tolerate a very selective amnesty for the best of illegals (no criminal record at all), and strictly enforce employment laws. Repeal the so called and misused anchor baby law (not retroactively). Secure the border (a must, and first) No special privileges for any one group of illegals. I could probably think of more but I don't see the point. Have you heard about the North American Union? Immigration reform as presented recently by our government was meant to bring us closer to it while keeping us too busy to see the big picture.
Also, La Raza and similar groups should be banned from being involved in the process. No work visas until everything settles down and we see how many workers, if any, that we need.

Most of us rely on the Internet, blackberry 's (?) and other types of communication technology. Why can't they have us just as informed as any of our devices do. Have it so we can look it ALL over (nothing hidden), and send in our in-put. That's democracy. Not they way they continue to do things. Out of the loop, or can't have a voice until it's too late or almost too late doesn't work for me.
Mame - You're mentioning that 5 letter word again. You know what happens when you do that. You're really going to have to stop mentioning those 5 letters. They don't spell anything, and it confuses YA cause it's not a scrabble word that has point value. Not on that board game.
edit - I don't know why you would disappear. I have already seen several posting the same 5 letter non-sense scrabble word.
edit : Chuck Junior - You don't have to convince me of this. The poster and I have always had respect for each other despite our disagreements. There are some if not most things I could agree on with the poster, as I have seen some of those ideas spring to light in here. And the ideas that the 2 of you are working on separate from the forum is fine. As I am sure that the poster also knows (and if they wish) to send all what the 2 of you have or collect at anytime to my email. And if they didn't know that - they know that now.

I think you know my answer on this. :)
I would like to change this forum from one side sniping at the other to something where ideas can be exchanged. I'll say it publicly for the first time...And I'm going to get the holy hell hammered out of me on both sides....but here goes:
This issue will require compromise on both sides.
This puppy poster and I have the ears of a few legislators in our respective states.
We have a common bond from somewhat opposing sides of the issue. I see their side...they see mine.
I'd like to see the dialogue between the 2 sides ramp up and stop all of the nonsense. Trolls not invited.
Both sides have a point. Let's find a middle ground.
Nice puppy...
Edit: I want to hear your IDEAS on how to solve this...both Pro and Aniti. My email is there so use it if you don't want to post it.
The poster I'm responding to and I are trying to come up with a list of proposals to submit to our elected "Representatives" by October 15th. All thoughts and ideas are welcome.
This is a chance for all of you to become part of the process instead of complaining.
As an aside: This poster and I initially didn't get along at all.
We talked...and there was a common ground there. This poster has my full respect.
Edit again. Petey: Noted and saved and thank you. I kept your observations in a word Doc.

I would be happy to get special interest organizations and lobbying OUT of the building of an immigration plan, how can the interests of all be served if you have certain special interest not only guiding the drafting of the bill but actively participating!
A reform bill most definately could be drafted that would serve the interest off all but back room politics and heavy lobbying prevents any attempt at an amicable attempt.
Voting would be great, love to see it happen but I do not hold out much hope.... I will even give you a star for your attempt :)

to chuck:
I dont believe in double standards but I have absolutely no problem of getting rid of the drunk drivers, the real criminals, gang members and the people who really do leech off of the system...Ive been thinking of a "probationary" system where people can have conditional status where if they paid income/back taxes, show that they had a clean background here and in their country of origin, can speak English and they would have to pay a general fine for overstaying or hopping the border. I also believe in mandatory medical checks paid by themselves for the people who hopped the border that is a requirement for any status change. I dont believe its unfair to keep regular check ups on the progress of the people to make sure that they are not committing crimes once they would have residence...during this "probationary" time if they do major crimes/misdemeanors they would still face deportation...after 5 years if they paid all taxes and have good behavior they could have normal residence and could wait further time to apply for citizenship. People will live, drive, work whether this system is in or not...food has to be on the table. I believe people actually want to be legal but dont have the resources or the time and the current system is in no way shape or form an efficient process.
I believe in the dream act...I think its fair that people who are willing to fight for our country should have the chance for fasttrack. I also believe that kids who graduated and didnt resort to crime on the streets have a chance to get an education.

Yes, I would. Is it possible that we the citizens could draft our own bill and have our elected take it seriously? Anyhow,i'd be interested to see what you 2 crazy kids have so far.
Chuck, the puppy has my email and my permission to give it to you. I wouldn't mind participating.

That sounds good to me. Popular vote, but don't expect it to hold up. Some people might sue and take it to court like they did with prop.187 in California. Did not stay up very long...

No thanks! According to our elected officials, I'm too lazy to know what I want. They'll make those decisions for me. After all that's why I put them there in the first place. Next I'll need them to mow my lawns, and pick the produce in my garden when they are done in office. (sarcasm)
