I am a US citizen and i wish to drive thru canada on my way to alaska.. i havent applied for a passport yet but i do have my birth certificate, DD214 and a valid drivers license.. will those documents be sufficient?

As long as your trip is this year you should be fine. Here's the deal - until the end of the year, you can drive into Canada (and more importantly back into the United States) with an official copy of your birth certificate (with a raised seal) and a government picture ID (make sure that your drivers license has a picture - most do). This will change in 2008, exactly when is up in the air, was to be January 1, but I believe it was delayed some.

If you enter or leave via plane or boat, you will need a passport, or proof that you have applied for one. Be careful, this may apply to ferries, if you enter that way on the west coast. Make sure you do indeed drive.

You can drive through Canada with a criminal record. IT'S GETTING INTO CANADA that may cause you problems. With the tighter security measures since 9/11 they may do an Interpol, type of check on you.

Yes, they will. Passports are not needed to drive to and from Canada until an. 2008 at the earliest. See website below to read the law.
