Don't make a big deal about it. The last thing they probably want is to have another person staring at them. If I were you, I would just have a normal conversation with them.

If it's a friend or a family member and a new loss then you can express your sympathy and wish them good healing. If it's someone you've just met who has already lost a limb then you should treat them just like you would anyone else. If they want to discuss their missing limb then they will bring it up. Basically, the lack of a limb is as much a part of their daily existence as having that limb is part of yours - to the amputee it's just not a big deal.

If someone has just lost it, is in the hospital or rehabilitation center and you go to visit, you may say "I am so sorry for your accident, it must be very difficult for you. Is there anything I can do to help you during this time?"

Then let them take the conversation where they like, be sympathetic and understanding and compassionate.

If it is someone you're meeting who hasn't recently lost their limb and is functioning out in society - for instance you are out at the mall and you are introduced to someone in a wheelchair who has lost their limbs, you do not call attention to it at all.

You look them in the eye and smile and say "Very nice to meet you." If the person brings up the topic of their lost limbs you would respond with sympathy and kindness, "I'm so sorry, it must be very difficult." and again, let them lead with the conversation. Most people who have lost limbs tend not to discuss it except with those close to them though.

I agree with Lisalotta. If it's a friend or family member, show that you feel sorry for them and say you're sorry that they lost a limb. It will show that you're understanding. If it's a stranger, don't say anything, because you wouldn't want to barge into their personal matters.

There is nothing to say. Just let them know that whatever they need you will be there for them. Thank God it was just a limb and not their life.
