That is too large of a dog in too small of a place. The dog needs space, exercise, a better environment. If you think he is sick, you should take him to the vet. Has he had his shots? What is your weather like? Does he have shelter? Does he have food? Water? Toys?
This doesn't sound like a good place for a large breed dog. Is there a reason you can't buy a large crate and bring him indoors during the time no one is home and crate train him?
That would make him happier and make him part of the family. He probably feels like an outsider. if you want a pet, he should be inside with the family. If you just want an animal chained outdoors, you should get a statue and put it in your yard.

He has an owner that neglects him, leaves him on the patio all day to whine and bark.. He has an owner that does nothing with him but stare at him out the patio doors wondering what could possibly be wrong.. He has an owner that is neglecting him.. He is lonely and sad and bored and wishes that he could jump off that small patio to his death..
Bring the dog into the house and teach him something do something with him, play with him, give him attention.. Why do you have him left out on the patio.. How dim does one have to be, to stare at their dog whining and barking and think that they might be sick.. Use your head ...

He is mostly likely lonely. He also probably needs more space to run and play. When our 7 month old yellow lab was fixed, he had to be locked up. He whimpered constantly. But when he got back to normal and we let him out with the other dogs, he was so happy and stopped the constant barking. So it could be a combination of loneliness and not enough space. Hope that this helps.

First of all you shouldn't keep a 5 month lab in a small patio. You should keep him/her inside your house. It might be cold or it's upset because it's lonely.He/she might even be sick but you don't know it.Keep your pup busy.Play with your pup. Also get him/her some toys to play with.By the way your lab might be barking and whining because it probably wants to go outside. That can be 1 of the problems. And think for a moment would you like to live in a small patio.Well on hot days take your pup inside to keep it cool in the air conditioning. In the winter you should DEFIANTLY take him/her inside. It can die if it's freezing outside.

He is probably sad. My dog did the same thing. The best thing i can tell you to do would be to start staying with your dog outside for a certain amount of time. Then, as each day goes by, slowly reduce the time you spend outside. You might also want to get a small ticking clock and wrap it in a towel or blanket and put it near where the dog sleeps. The sound of the ticking helps the dog by substituting the sound of the mother. Those are the exact things I did to raise my dog, and now she is just fine, but the dog should have a bigger area than what you are giving it. It is a bigger breed of dog, and it needs more space. If you would give it a bigger area, it may not have as big of problem as it does. My dog was raised as an indoor-outdoor dog, and she is a large size dog. Just ry to give him more space, and give him attention!

Labs are very active & often need "jobs" and regular daily activity to stay physically and mentally heathy. Confining a large breed dog to a small area is not right... maybe consider a different living situation for him?

your dog sounds sound and bored and wants some attention. Dogs thrive on attention and loved to be walked which to me by the way your saying it your dog doesn't get.
I would start by walking your dog more and giving it more attention-Play ball - Labs love playing fetch. Play chase give your dog praise for being good.
How would you feel in your dogs shoes? Probably not very good.
If its hot out leave some water so your dog don't get dehydrated.
II would never eave my dog outside all the time- to me thats cruel.
I hope this helps

He very likely could just be bored and understimulated. Be sure to take him for long walks, let him play a lot, and get him toys, and maybe some treats that take a long time to finish (Purina makes rawhide rolls with meat-flavored stuff in the middle, which work really good). Do what you can to make sure your dog is just not bored!

When i just got my border collie pup home from the breeder, he whines and barks all day.
I think your puppy is sad because this may the first time that he's been away from his mom and siblings. Some people provide warm water bottle or ticking clock for the first couple of nights as a surrogate for his mom and siblings' warm bodies and comfort. If you got your puppy from a breeder, it is best if you could get a towel and rub it against his/her mom and give it to your pup, so he/she could sleep on it at night. If you just got the puppy for a couple of weeks, you should keep them in your bedroom because they are fearful and they need to relieve themselves fairly often.
Don't worry. Your pup will feel much better after a few weeks. =]

He's not sick, he want to be part of his pack, which is you and your family.
Labs needs a ton of attention and need to be walked everyday. Since it is still small, you should walk him for about 15 minutes daily. I would also recommend that you throw a ball for him and teach him to bring it back to you. Bring him indoors with the family and give him something to chew on. Believe me giving them time with the "pack" helps them to calm down and behave. If you spend time with him the whining will subside expect for when it's hungry or needs to potty.
