Drinking a lot of water will not help you lose weight. It isn't necessarily healthy for you either. That is not to say that it is particularly unhealthy. After all, it is healthier to be well hydrated than it is to be dehydrated, but your kidneys will filter out any water you drink that is in excess of your body's needs.
The only thing you need to do to lose weight is eat less. Don't starve, just eat until you are satisfied. A lot of people eat until they stuff themselves so full that they cannot fit anymore food in their stomachs. That is a surefire way to get fat.
Your body will store any calories you eat into fat cells. When a fat cell is filled to capacity then your body will create a new fat cell to store any excess energy. Once a fat cell is created, it will never die. The reality is that the fat cells merely shrink and do not disappear.
That is the reason that it is so easy for people that were once overweight to quickly gain back the weight they lose. All you need to do is pig out a couple of times and all the shrunken fat cells in your body with start to grow again.
Your body will also convert excess protein to fat. The Atkin's diet and other protein diets do nothing to promote the loss of fat. Yes you will lose weight, but that is because depraving your body of sugars and other carbohydrates will cause your pancreas to secrete glucagon which will convert the glycogen in your muscles and liver into sugar that your body needs.
Glycogen is very heavy, much heavier than fat is so people stand on a scale and think their low carb diet is helping them to become skinny. The majority of weight loss will be from the loss of glycogen and you will retain your fat cells.
If you want to lose fat then you are better off eating a bit less and excercising a bit more. There is no easy solution. Fit people lead active lives and look the way they live. The same is true for fat people. They look the way they live. Change your lifestyle if you want to see results.
Don't starve yourself though, your body needs a certain amount of calories and protein to function and maintain basic immune function. You get fat when you eat more than you need. It's as simple as that.

8-10 8-ounce glasses is recommended. So, say, at least 2 33-ounce bottles. More of you exercise a lot.
No, the water itself doesn't help you lose weight, but when you lose weight, there's more waste in your system, and the water helps cleanse it out. (They say it fills you up; I say, Sure, for about a minute!)

You can't lose weight by drinking water, but it is vital for keeping healthy. Too much flushes important minerals out of your system before your body has a chance to absorb them. Most of our daily water intake comes from our food anyway.

Don't confuse desire with hunger. Drink a glass of water if you feel hungry to see if that is what you're really craving.

Use a vegetable bean dip such as hummus instead of ranch dressing or perhaps a fatty cream-based dip.

Water is just more to hydrate you. If you exercise and eat plenty and drink water, you'll be good.
