After Soviet Russia declared a separate peace with Imperial Germany, the remaining allies sent troops to Vladivostok, Archangel and Murmansk under the pretense of guarding Allied munition stocks which remained there. The venture was the idea of the British Minister of Munitions, Winston Churchill. The allies did not disengage their troops from these three areas until early to mid-1919. To get more information, merely enter the term "Archangel-Murmansk Intervention" into your search engine.

Seems like your Grandfather was part of the Military Mission to Russia, these men were out there after WW1, finished because of concerns about British interest and Investments in "White" Russia. You also have to remember at this time there was a "civil" war between the "Reds" (Communists) and the "Whites" supporters of the Royal Tsar, who happened to be related to the British Royal family.

There was the so-called "Czech Legion" used to guard the main railway supply lines to Archangel, this was made up from troops from Italy, Austria, Hungary (former captured POW) Romanians, Americans, British etc..etc..

Oh so sory to hear that too
Yeah, I am too, but it happening to one of my grandfather brothers & its happened in WW2 not WW1
When the battle end, apparently he being left behind by his superior & company so like or not, he is being forced to adapt in that country for many many years
He even died peacefully in the land he being stranded & being burried in there too
He is even change his nationality & name too & starting his life & family in there

Its not a bizzare story cuz when an army going to retreat, its a common thing that many had been left behind especially when they are being defeated & need to escape from enemy encirclement that comes very rapidly

Try to call any war veteran or war retirement organization in your country & try to search any news & info about that in your local library or if u dare, try to search any info about that in Russia library too

I hope its work & good luck !
