Does anyone really understand what Revelations is talking about? I have having problems understanding what it really trying to be said. I am interested in understanding the signs of Gods return.

--YOU WOULD have to take into account much of the Hebrew scripture or OT because references to symbolic things in revelation can be interpreted that way!

--0NE THING you need to take into serious account is the invisible presence of Christ and the ousting of Satan the devil from the heavens. Indicating that there is a short time before armageddon. (time of the end)
--THIS most likely is not what you want to read because of your thinking Christ is to return visibly, but it has happened:

(Revelation 12:7-10) “. . .And war broke out in heaven: Mi′cha·el and his angels battled with the dragon, and the dragon and its angels battled 8 but it did not prevail, neither was a place found for them any longer in heaven. 9 So down the great dragon was hurled, the original serpent, the one called Devil and Satan, who is misleading the entire inhabited earth; he was hurled down to the earth, and his angels were hurled down with him. 10 And I heard a loud voice in heaven say: “Now have come to pass the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ, because the accuser of our brothers has been hurled down, who accuses them day and night before our God!”

--THAT IS WHY we are in the time of the end as Jesus outlined would take place:
(Matthew 24:3-8) “3 While he was sitting upon the Mount of Olives, the disciples approached him privately, saying: “Tell us, When will these things be, and what will be the sign of your presence and of the conclusion of the system of things?” 4 And in answer Jesus said to them: “Look out that nobody misleads YOU; 5 for many will come on the basis of my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will mislead many. 6 YOU are going to hear of wars and reports of wars; see that YOU are not terrified. For these things must take place, but the end is not yet. 7 “For nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be food shortages and earthquakes in one place after another. 8 All these things are a beginning of pangs of distress.”

****This "pangs of distress" period corresponds with the battle in heaven with Christ and Satan being tossed out of the heavens and "woe for the earth" the devil having a short time, before armageddon and his being abyssed.

--MUCH PROOF available that this has taken place since 1914 if you so wish me to list them!

You have to remember God didn't write or even edit the bible. Man did, mostly Jews did to be more specific. It doesn't matter if you believe in God or not. Revelations has the most bland prophecies no matter how the Earth is destroyed (global warming, nuclear war, asteroids, etc) it would be correct be in a sense. Also, it is stated nobody will know when. So if you believe, don't waste time looking for signs. There hasn't been an age in time since The New Testament was published that didn't show similar predictions or the people didn't believe the end was near.

This may sound flippant, and I don't mean it to be. I wonder if Revelations would be more understandable if the editors of the Bible had not decided to include any other books in the Bible following Revelations. Maybe it was clarified in the next chapter, which we cannot read.

Read it, study it yourself, but once you've gone through it a few times, go get yourself a good commentary on it. There are lots of good books that explain the numerology and symbolism in Revelations.

If possible, get a commentary written by a Catholic scholar -- the others tend to be biased and more interested in proselytizing than in explicating.

All you have to know to understand any part of the Bible is that it is complete fiction, composed over many years by many different people. Take it as such and you might still enjoy it.

Oh, and by the way, the world isn't going to end.

I understand it but then I have taken a college course that explained all the different countries and kings involved. You can do it yourself, but it is better to have a learned professor help you.
