Have you changed from fullers earth to wood pellets - or even another brand of litter? If his box is clean - it might just be that her prefers a pad rather than pawing at litter.
My cats had a covered in litter tray - it helps prevent smells - and gave them the privacy that cats seem to like.
Have you ever shown him what to do or have you just expected him to know?

My vet told me that cats only urinate outside of the litter box for 2 reasons. 1) Medical Issues such as bladder infections, kidney stones, blockages etc. or 2) They are upset about something. What are you using to clean out the litter box. Sometimes that could cause problems. I hope that you are able to resolve this issue.

I have a special ed. cat who does that too. She goes in the litter box but not all the way, so she pees outside the box. We no longer have carpet and I keep a towel there. She's just not too bright but is a sweetie. 10 yrs. old and just does dumb stuff so I just laugh.

You have done two good things. You have checked on his health with the vet, and you are protecting the spot he goes. I am posting a link on litter box use that may give you some ideas that you might not have thought about.

You have to discipline him. Making a loud noise whenever he pees where you don't want him too. (like a shriek). But don't yell at him a minute later because if you yell at him too long after he did the unwanted behavior he will not understand what he is being punished for. The same with praising him when he does the wanted behavior. If you praise him much later he will not know what good he has done.

Here is the thing, your cat is doing that because he is marking his territory so that no one will come near the box.Her is how you stop it, you can buy this stuff at the store that animals don't like to smell its like a powder or spray.I wish you luck with your cat.

Does he pee in the same place over and over again? If he does move the litter box up to where he does.

Ask the vet to check for either a urinary tract infection or diabetes. Either one will cause the cat to urinate outside of the litterbox.

my cat started doing the same thing. we got that cat urine nuetralizing spray, its like $4 at walmart in the cat aisle, and sprayed it where she was peeing and it not only got rid of the smell but it stopped her from peeing there too. it smells citrusy, and i guess cats don't like it.
