Well, I am a huge fan! I'm wondering if I should join or not in a few years as I am thinking on other plans, and my dad won't have it, since he was in the vietnam war.
Anyway, I was wondering, what is the Marines like compared to other military branches?
A lot of people have told me its one of the most intense training out of all of them, and is it true that the Marines are trained to kill, train and kill?

And also, i was wondering if The Marines is anything like the movie Jarhead?
Thanks so much!
Go Marines! =]

Another qeustion, and i think this goes for all branches. I don't understand how it works.
*So you go and you serve for how ever many years that you want?
*Or do they give you a certain amount of years that you have to serve and then you have to leave?
*Or can you choose to stay and serve longer?

The marine corps, which is a division of the navy, has the hardest boot camp training program. As far as occupational training you can get the same occupation in other branches of service, but its mostly up to the individual to decide what they want to do.

That movie jarhead doesn't depict the marines as they are, that was just a movie.

As for enlistment you sign up for so many years and that's what your enlistment entails. Usually its like 4 years active and 4 years reserve, but it varies from branch to branch. For example the national guard has a 6 year active and 2 year inactive enlistment which is required if you want a bonus and the Montgomery GI Bill. With the military regardless of which branch you choose, once your initial enlistment terms are up you have the choice to get out or to reinlist.

The Marines care about the mission and do whatever it takes to accomplish it. You wont join the Marine Corps to have it easy, have nice barracks, have a whole lot of time to go to school (although you may get lucky if you pick the right MOS). You'll join it for the three fundamentals that we Marines are supposed to live by. Honor, Courage, and Commitment. You join it to be proud and serve your country. It has its ups and downs, and most don't stay in for the full career, but no matter how much a Marine may say they hate it, or they're mad because they're not getting things their way, when they get out they are ALWAYS proud to say they were a Marine. I am very proud. And I will be when my time comes to get out. Depending what your job is, you will work very hard and work long hours. I can only speak from experience, so I dont know how all the jobs are.

Yes, we are trained to kill. All males and females are trained in at least a basic Marine Combat Training level. In boot camp we are trained in a type of martial arts, trained how to shoot people, and the word "kill", is even used as a greeting to other ppl. More of a joke than anything, but its true. Almost everyone graduates boot camp. If you decide to join, do it for the right reasons. Oorah

The Marines are " The Presidents Own ", first to see action.
First to land in hostile territory, and on the front-lines.
There are many jobs one could have whilst a Marine. If you are so inclined you could be an 0311 Grunt ( infantry ) or what ever you qualify to become. One things for sure...

Never ask others on something that is totally your decision. Do what you feel in your heart. You're on the net so keep looking up all of the information on it then decide yourself. Being a Marine is great for some but other's can't stack up to the challenge. Do what your heart tells you.

The Marines are the most elite fighting force on the planet. If you love your country and are mentally tough, you'll love it.

When I say that I don't refer to special operations groups, the SEALS and other commandos are better but I doubt you can call them a "fighting force" as they work in small groups. The point is, when the country has got to go to war, the Marines go in first and kick some ***.

Jarhead was a movie. I served in Desert Storm and never did we play and act that gay behavioral stuff that was in the movie.

The Marines overall are a bunch of pompous, overzealous jerks who like to think that they are the badasses of the world.(Most of them)They scorn other service members and like to look down especially on the army as they refer to the acronym aint real marines yet.

JUST KIDDING!

The Marines are one of the most toughest branches of the service to go into. They have strict standards and require utmost discipline and honor. If you choose this path then I wish you luck.

Oo-rah!(Marines)
