Rats can be clean.
Don't humans do all the things you mention above?

A domesticated rat kept in a clean cage can be a fun pet for a kid if that's what the child likes. Domesticated rats only carry diseases if they are exposed to diseases and the pet food store doesn't carry diseased food for rodents.

They do tend to urinate randomly...so letting them run around isn't a good idea. And this also means cleaning the cage is a frequent job....and washing hands after handling them is a good idea.

Domesticated rats don't bite unless you handle them in a way they hurts or threatens them....and this is true of any pet.

I'm not a "rat person" but I think your overgeneralizing the little critters.

As a household pest, they are nasty...they soil things, chew things, get into food....and in some cases they will bite...especially infants and young children. But again, we aren't talking about pet rats...pet rats don't see humans as the enemy or as lunch.

I am a rat owner and currently have 11 and I would be lost without them they are the most loving, sweet natured pets a person could have and my mum, sister, nephew and many more people I know are big time rat lovers. So don't call all rats dirty disease spreaders only vermin rats are dirty. Get your self a pet (fancy) rat and find out for your self my rats are very cuddly kissy loving boys and girls.

Rats are extremely clean by nature. They often lick themselves clean several times a day.

Rats get blamed on a lot of things, even though it's the humans who should be blamed. Why are rats blamed for spreading diseases? Could it be because humans put trash everywhere, and it's just a magnet for other disease carry pests, like mosquitoes, flies, etc. So when rats smell the food, they'll go eat the food, and if the food is contaminated, they rats become contaminated, and they get blamed for spreading diseases.

Well-socialized, healthy rats are a delight. They don't bite except for a playful nibble (like a puppy or kitten) & if that's a problem they can easilly be trained out of it. They're not dirty, they wash themselves all the time like cats do.
When I was a kitten, I was afraid of rats b/c I believed the propaganda & I'm so glad to know the truth. These little guys are loving, smart & playful, a joy to live with & a it's a blast interacting with them.
As for wild rats, I'd be much more nervous encountering wild dogs.

I Love my rats. I had to have 1 of them (Hamlet) put to sleep today as he had a huge tumour. His little brother raffles is so cute and lovable. I was like you when my partner said he wanted 2 rats. I couldn't stand the thought of there tails and i also thought they were disease ridden. We have had the rats 2 years now and i can honestly say my opinions have changed. They are very clean sweet intelligent and they have never once bitten me. Don't get me wrong wild rats are terrible for carrying disease but it is us humans to blame for that by leaving litter laying around. Rats are only acting on instinct that being to survive.

Ok even wild rats don't carry that many diseases. Yes, personally I would like to be bitten by a wild rat but that would hardly ever happen unless you threaten it, rats just run away from you. I have a pet rat and he certainly would never bite me and I have no fear of catching diseases from him. I've had him for two years and I'm not dead yet. To be honest I would be more scared if I was bitten by a human as we carry more diseases.

Bit of a silly question really. My friend had rat and I handled them often, they are very calm and very intelliagnt creature that would only bite if you give them a reason (as would any animal, or human for that matter) I dont think this is the place for vilifying animals.

well first, only wild rats carry and spread disease. And rats do not "attack" people.. the disease is typically carried thru fleas, not from the rats directly.

Rats are actually clean animals.. in their own ways. Yes, they are attracted to garbage, but what else are they going to eat? Besides, its part of mother nature's clean up crew. If rats and other vermin didnt eat garbage.. it would sit there are rot and stink. Rats will eat their dead.. sounds gross, but, they eat the dead before it attracts harmful bacteria.. its their way of disease prevention.

Pet rats that are bred in capitvity are clean animals. They often groom themselves and are happy if their cage is kept clean. I have owned several of them. They can be very affectionate, and are intelligent animals.

are you talking sewer or domestic??

the fleas on the wild rats spread the disease !!

Domestic rats make nice pets if treated right , people compare them to dogs in a small package.

Rats are very clean animals!!

dogs and cats bite! they can catch disease so can humans, as for them attacking people wouldnt you be scared if a giant cornered you ??

Rats have a bad rep and i think its people who are so singleminded!
