It would be helpful if we knew what the 2500 bill was for...

If you can show that the vehicle is valued at less than what the revenue dept is stating, or have receipts showing the total cost of the vehicle when purchased, and the amount of sales/use tax paid, you will receive a refund or will pay a lower amount. Get an estimate from a used car dealer, or compare your car's value to what blue book value is. The revenue dept apparently feels you paid less sales/use tax than what you should have paid, and now they are collecting. If the car was gifted to you, be honest and state it was a gift. If you decide to say you paid 200 dollars, and the car is valued at blue book value of 3000 dollars, the revenue dept will receive a red flag and your title application will come into question, which appears to have happened. If it is decided that you must pay the tax, payment plans are normally worked out.

Call the clerks office, Sheriff or whoever collects the taxes in your state and ask some questions. Tell them that you just got the car and didn't own it for all the taxes.

The only other thing I can figure is that the car was bought from out of state. They are making you pay the sales taxes on it. That would sound about right dollar-wise.

The only one who can answer your question is the tag office that has sent you the bill for taxes. How are we supposed to know?

WHY DON'T YOU JUST CALL YOUR LOCAL DMV OFFICE, THEY WILL BE ABLE TO ANSWER ANY AND ALL OF YOUR QUESTIONS AND AT THE SAME TIME YOU WILL BE GETTING THE CORRECT ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION.
