My husband gets that all the time. He is legal but people just have the notion drilled in their brains that he is unable to speak English. He runs his own construction business, I'd hope that he could speak to the builders. When I face these types of situations I just look whomever it is that thinks he doesn't speak English and let them finish what they have to say, and then turn and look at my husband and say QUE? Then I look back at them and tell that person he does speak English, but were not interested in whatever it is we were thinking of purchasing, or looking at. He was speaking English before he immigrated here. Sometimes he asks me if I understand English. There are times I have to ask him if he understands Spanish, because he has forgotten some words.
Oh and another thing I hate is those people who think that someone doesn't speak English, they think by talking louder that they can be understood better, I like to answer that person back just as they asked. That is funny!

It sounds like you're being stereotyped...too many people assume that ALL Mexican people in the U.S. are illegals. A lot of this is due to the constant hype from conservatives about illegals..in truth, illegal immigrants are a very small percentage of all immigrants.

Sorry to hear about this...a lot of this probably has to do with which geographic region you are in. In my particular area (near Louisville KY) there is a very large Mexican population so we really don't have as much trouble with the assumptions that Mexicans all were born in Mexico and only speak Spanish.

What I dislike the most is when i stand up against hate from anti-illegals towards illegal immigrants and some tell me to go back to Mexico.

what anti-illegals hate the most is when they stalk me on YA and see that I'm American (not an illegal from Mexico, even though my family is from Mexico, and I also consider myself Mexican American or Hispanic American) but like I was saying, anti-illegals don't like when they find out that I'm going to a top university here in the US to try to make a life out of myself so other Latinos and minorities can see what we can do.

That's something I really don't understand about America. People seem to have this strange gut reaction that they can't control (or don't try to). I guess racism is not a rational response. They do the same in my country (South Africa) about immigrants from central Africa, to the extent that anyone with really dark skin gets boxed as Nigerian druglords (so that one black person will judge another black person as "too" black). It's embarrassing the way we refuse to welcome new people into our culture.

It's dumb that people do. And whoever does is obviously VERY ignorant. That's like saying that all White ppl that live in the South are rednecks. Or that all African-Americans act ghetto. I'm a Mexican-American. I was born in California. My parents are both bi-lingual legal citizens.
And as you can clearly tell I speak English.

I bet that is a pain. Sorry. I never assume that I know all about someone by the way they look. I wish more people would. Unless I am you why would I assume you are illegal?

I don't hate that because I am not of the Mexican brand.

In certain areas like many places in California, people of your type are just pretty uncommon. Essentially you hate it when you're stereotyped. We all hate that.

If it helps, "I'm sorry."
