Which bike do you suggest:
1. A cruiser ( I really want to purchase this bike for aesthetic purposes less $$)
2. A mountain bike (a really smooth ride more $$)

If this is a bike that you plan on using to get from class to class there is a major thing you want to consider. Don't get a flashy bike. Those are the most likely to get stolen. I used a mountain bike while at college. Great for jumping curbs and whatnot. Be sure to buy a good lock. Even one that comes with some sort of warranty against theft. Hope this helps.

Those are two different types of bikes.
You need to ask yourself what your plans are using the bike.
If it's just commuting from one end of the campus to the other then I would go with the cruiser. Many of the bikes like Electra offer 3-8 speeds with all kinds of neat features such as baskets, racks, cup holders, etc.
If you want something that you can take out on some single track and doing some major miles, then go with the mountain bike. It is a bit more durable and lighter then the commuter, but it's more versatile in the sense that you'll be able to use it for recreation and commuting.

i think aesthetics are very important, but if you will have to be climbing a lot of hills, the cruiser will make you suffer. one compromise is an older three speed. looks classy, can often be found used for not too much cash, and at least has some gear ratio for getting you around. the mountain bike might be the most reliable, but if you're like me, i hate the aesthetics!

Try finding a good used bike. You will save the $$. Might even find a really good bike for cents on the dollar.

it does not matter how much $$ it is you have to get a bike that rides good and that you like
