Another quick question. Is it good to give the cat wet food? I feel like dry food is so bland. The adoption Cat Lady told us dry food is good for their teeth but if we do give wet food only do it for breakfast and dinner and thats it. Curious what people think about wet food. My fiance's cat had some reaction to wet food 20 yrs ago so she's afraid now. Is a reaction common? Just curious..

Cats NEED canned food. Period.
Veterinarians who SPECIALIZE in feline nutrition are now discovering that many health problems (obesity, diabetes, urinary tract problems, kidney & liver disease, IBD, and believe it or not DENTAL problems) can be prevented by feeding cats a diet high in ANIMAL protein/water and low in carbohydrates(which is what canned food is).
Dry food does NOT help clean teeth unless it is specially treated and labeled as "dental".
This website has some great information: http://www.catinfo.org/

If you want to feed dry food, it should make up LESS than 1/4 of your cats diet.

As for your finance's cat having a "reaction", that could have been an allergic reaction to the protein source (not all cats can eat all meat sources and fish is usually the culprit) or a problem with the dyes used (brightly colored canned food=dyes).
Not all canned foods are created equal. Higher price does not mean higher quality. Read the labels! http://www.catinfo.org/commercialcannedfoods.htm
I use this site a lot myself: http://www.geocities.com/jmpeerson/canfood.html

Canned foods from 20 years ago worked with different ingredient lists, some things have changed since then.

Don't give the cheap foods, check for something that has at least 12% protein in it to get the best type.

Usually you can't find the good ones at the grocery store, you have to go to the pet supplies stores to get the better selection. Look for at least two meat sources in the first 4 ingredients, and neither of those should be a by-product.

Without knowing what the reaction was to, in a cat 20 years ago, it's impossible to guess if any of your cats would have the same reaction.

If you don't want to give wet food, you can still give yours baked chicken (no coating or bones), or share a can of tuna in water (not oil) with them, or even bits of the meat being cooked for supper provided it's fresh and not containing a bone.

Hi. It's best to get a real good dry food, and then also use a small portion of canned food. Every cat and dog deserves their meat. This way they are covered both ways. When you find the combination that works, don't change it. If you change the food a bunch I know it's nasty to say this, but your cat might get the squirts. I don't know why God made cats the way He did, but when it comes to elimination they are a weapon. Nothing stinks worse than that. So find your food formula and stay with it. Every body will be happy.

Here's my stance on food: I try to think to myself, "How would I like it if I had to eat the same sutff over and over?" I try to give my kitten a variety of food w/o upsetting her diet (i.e. different mediums, but the same brand).
I feed my Madeline dry food about 95% of the time. Once per week, I give her 1/2 of a small can of wet food that's mixed in with her dry food. Two days later, I give her the other half mixed with the dry.
I also feed her treats when she's good...only a couple times per week, if that.
I wouldn't give the cat a steady stream of wet food b/c it's imperative that they use their teeth. That's just MHO.
Cheers.

Wet food is very important for cat's health. Maybe the BHT or FD&C food coloring is bothering her. I would try Wellness canned cat food, if I had a cat. Flavors they've grown attached to, has a lot to do with a cats' pickiness, too.

Trader Joes has premium canned cat food dinners, which are only 59cents-though they may make your cat's poo a little stinky, my cat is obsessed with it.

He has a shiny coat and more energy than ever. I have also fed him Avoderm, which is amazing-just a bit more pricy.

But Amazon has some amazing deals with it! Make sure you always leave dry food out for him too.

Feeding your cat right will prevent many future health problems.

It's largely a question of owner preference and trial and error with cats. My cats would kill me if they did'nt get dry food for Breakfast (IAMS) but at bedtime they get wet (Whiskas pouches) Iams is better for their teeth but it is also good to give a change. My daughters cats get nothing but IAMS and love it. Ask my cats, dried food is not bland and there are different flavours to choose from. Cats will tell you if they don't like what you are feeding them and follow their advice !!

Having wet foot too much isnt good for them. I give my cats wet food probably 3 times a week if that.

My cats eat only meat - a raw meat diet I make for them and canned food.

Unless you can have your cat chew on bones and chew on chunks of meat you may always be looking at dental cleanings when necessary. Dry food does NOT clean the teeth.

A lot of dental health is dependent on genetics - that's true for people too.
