Towards the end of August my family and I are coming out to California for the weekend. We are staying in the Woodland Hills area and want to take my son to the beach. I know we will be by Malibu Beach but the actual beach itself is quite long. Where is the best part of the beach to go to? My son has only been to the beach once before (and that was 6 years ago) so I am looking for a nice, clean beach where the waves aren't too much. Also a bathroom nearby would be nice. Any suggestions?

If you are referring to the actual Malibu Colony, much of the beach area is private property, and public access is very limited. To avoid being arrested, I would pick a different part of the beach. May I suggest Will Rogers State Beach.

For the very BEST (repeat: BEST) information on southern California beaches go to "www.watchthewater.org" This site gives you enough information about Los Angeles County beaches to last a life time, including real time closed circuit cameras to actually see what is happening at the beaches.

If you want to go to Malibu because you want to see celebreties well don't plan on being able to park anywhere close...have someone drop you off and pick you up later. You will not be able to park anywhere near by. I don't really think this is where you want to go though, I wouldn't recommend it.

I agree with Will Rogers as being the easiest to get to from Woodland Hills (take Topanga Cyn Blvd). Santa Monica is also a great alternative, as the beaches are clean, nice and wide, family friendly, and you can also have fun at the Promenade (stores, restaurants, streets blocked off from cars so fun to walk, street entertainers.) Venice is interesting but less family friendly.

Alot the Malibu beaches suffer from overcrowding and lack of parking.

I prefer Zuma beach to the North end. Santa Monica/Venice Beaches to the South have alot of interesting "culture".

Zuma Beach is more secluded and quieter and it's very pretty and pristine.

Go to Oxnard or Ventura, the beaches there seem to be better...
