a few feet in front of the car, and a few feet in back of the car. this should give you good practice. and use cones instead of other cars. they are more forgiving. good luck with you practicing.

Okay............I can't draw you a diagram but here goes.
If you parallel park along the curb, you need
1 - 1/2 car lengths of space to fit in.
If you want to set up cones to practice.....
Park your car along a curb, then place two cones behind the rear bumper, one at the curbside and the other along the driver's side.
Then pace off a car length and a half forward along the driver's side of the car starting at the rear bumper. Place another cone at this point. You now have your parking space.
You can also place an additional cone another car's length in front of the front cone to represent another vehicle parked in front of your space. Then pull out and begin practicing. You'll need at least 4 cones to do this. Six is better so you can fully outline your pattern.
If you don't have cones, you can use empty milk jugs half full of water with a long stick placed in the top so you can see it from the driver's seat.

The cars should be about a car length apart, go practice in between two really crappy cars, and just go very slowly it takes some practice unless your naturally gifted in driving, like me. But if you insist on using cones space them about 10 ft apart and gradually get in closer to about 8 or so depending on the length of the vehicle your using. To make it more exciting put a egg on top of the cone just so there is some added incentive to be careful.

Very easy . Park your car by the curb with no other vehicles parked near you. Place the cones closest to the center line of the road and 3 feet behind your car and the other 3 feet in front. Now practice pulling away from the curb. Then practice your parallel parking. When you become good at this distance ...bring them closer to the car and practice some more. Have fun and relax. PS: to find existing standard distances measure the ones downtown on the main street.

I would start with the length of your car plus eight feet. When you can do that, reduce gradually by four feet.
