How much *will* it cost? Much less in the future.

Demand has yet to work its magic to bring costs down. Right now the converter boxes are essentially mid- to high-end ATSC tuners, that start around $100 and go up to maybe $200.

When millions of people start buying them because they don't want to replace their old tube Tvs, you'll see prices drop to $50 or less. And the FCC is going to offer $40 vouchers to people to buy them (money already approved by Congress).

You can pick up a Freeview box for around £20. This will give you currently about 30 channels of TV (including BBC, ITV and Five), and a dozen radio stations. Do make sure that your location can receive digital via an aerial. You may need an aerial upgrade.
