Our centerpieces will be a model ship. We would like the guests to take them when they leave, if they so choose. Of course, there is only one ship per table, and there are 10 people at each table. Any ideas on a fun way to give these out? BTW- giving them to the children may not be an option, since there will only be about 4 kids at the wedding, and there will be about 13 ships to give out.

put a number under each centerpiece and under each chair and whoever's chair number matches the centerpiece then they "won" it.

Generally guests know that they are welcome to take the centerpieces. Some even realize that they are actually doing the bride a favor by taking them away!! To encourage guests to take them I would make sure the centerpiece is something they would really want to have. When selecting a centerpiece style ask yourself "would this look good on my table at home or my desk at work?" Simple elegant styles such as a votive of roses work well for this tactic. Your other option to make the centerpieces enticing is to look for a particularly unique style. You also might consider using your favors as the centerpiece, depending on the favor. The bride and groom might set out several small fishbowls with really pretty fish to make a design down the center of the table which was rectangular instead of round. Colored lights made the hugh of the water beautiful while adding some ambient lighting.

I suggest asking your emcee or DJ they usually have that already in the plan. I have seen it done where they ask somone to take out $1 and then dance around the table, they hadn the $1 to someone else who also dances around.
When it's done, it is the person who pulled out the $1 that gets the centerpiece and the $1 goes to the bride and groom.

I have also seen where they ask everyone at the table the month and day of their birthday and whoever is closest to the wedding date gets the centerpiece.

I am sure whatever you decide it will be fine, and you will probablt have a few left over. someone always forgets it or doesn't want it.

well, what I was thinking for my friends wedding since we are making them and want to give them away is doing a little trivia...asking a question about the couple and whoever answers it right can take home a centerpiece. if you dont want to do something so involved like that then you could give ti to the person at each table whos birthday is closest to the wedding day or something like that.

Ask the DJ to go to each table and ask who at the table will sing a song with "love" in it. The first who does that will get the centerpiece. If there is a table where no one will sing, see if there are two at one table.

under the centerpiece, put a number from say 1 thru 31 and the person with the birthdate nearest the number gets the model ship.

What my cousin did at his wedding was had a little game where the dj would ask a question and whoever won gets to take home the centerpiece.

Have a note or something taped to the bottom of one of the chairs, and don't tell anyone before the reception. Then at the end of the program, the MC can make the announcement that the person in that seat gets the centrepiece.
COOL centrepiece, by the way!

Get some of those little sticker stars, and put one on the bottom of 13 glasses. The people who get the little stars, get the centerpieces.

As long as you are not assigning seats, then the best way would be the seat number like everyone else is talking about, or put a sticker on the bottom of the plate (so long as it is either removable, or not a rented plate setting). Or you can bring everyone's RSVP card, put them in a large vase or basket, and draw out 13 cards. Whoevers card gets drawn gets it.
