Aggravated assualt, assault with a deadly weapon or attempted murder would be the charge; depending on the charge, the past history, the plea bargain and everything else, could be probation through 20 years, depending upon the jurisdiction.

If it was an accident, and you were not at fault, there may be no penalty at all.
If it can be shown that you intended to kill the person and did, that might be considered a capital offense.
In between, it will depend on the circumstances.
